What is your expectation on a part that is listed as reconditioned?

I may do things differently, but when I recondition or restore a part, if its metal, I grind the excess ‘slag’ from the welds, say from a factory welded k-frame or crossmember, I debur the entire part free from rough edges, etc etc.

If the part is rusted & pitted and has a hole where there shouldn’t be a hole, I’d repair that section too, even if it doesn’t hinder the operation or structural integrity of the part ;). ya know, fix the cosmetics, make it look good ;)

Heres a trans crossmember. My guess is it was media blasted real quick and then sent to the powder coater. Now who does the blasting and powder coating, and checks the final outcome, quality control, I don’t know.

Here's some pics, now make no mistake, it’s a fine part and will work for years to come, but this little thing irks me, and I would have fixed it before I sold it to someone as reconditioned.

This x-member might have had a decent amount of rust, there's some rust pits that the powder coating fills up, and on the bottom here, there's a rust hole all the way through. No big deal, but I would have fixed it. If there was a few of these laying on a table at a swap meet, I wouldn't have chosen this particular one. But I have it, ordered & paid for it.

I'm not gonna name the company because I don't want to bash them in any way. Not the intentions of this thread. I'm still a life long customer. :)

I hope I don't seem like I'm making a big deal, It's really not worth it to ask for a different one, I'd gladly pay shipping both ways, and I'm sure they'd make it right, but I don't want to ask. I'll fix this one. Little bit of bondo should be good to go! LOL

Well that sucks. I have sold a couple reconditioned crossmember before. Never anything with a rust hole in it like that. I have patched and welded up stuff, but usually sell it raw steel sandblasted or with a thin coat of rattle can primer over the sandblasted metal.

Cant offer any advice to you except tell em your not happy and want to send it back for your money back. If they tell you all sales final and your outta luck, then move on I guess.

I'd return it, get a refund & find a dirty, greasy one (protected that way) & clean it up myself.

Yikes. If you brought me that to powder coat, i'd say OK as it's your call... not the coaters issue IMO.

I wouldn't want that thing. If you want one that isn't rotted, let me know. It's not coated! :)

Not necessarily. Could also mean cleaned, inspected for defects and / or painted.
or, in the case of the OP "cleaner, ignored for defect, and repainted"

there has got to be a reason it was removed in the first place...and chances are, that reason was, it failed

How do you know what is hidden beneath the (apparently) thick coating of (paint/powder) whatever? I wouldn't trust that thing as far as I could throw it.

If he had sent that to me to powder coat, I would have actually restored the metal first and addressed ALL of those defects: the slag, the lame welds (including welding up the hole) and deburring anything that could ever cut anybody open when they worked on the car. In my opinion there's no point at all in just polishing a turd. If you're going to do it at all, do it right the first time.

If I was told about that and agreed to it, then there wouldn't be a problem and I would just fix it myself.
If I wasn't shown or told about it in advance and got that as reconditioned I'd be pissed.
That's literally just a rusted through part with powder coating over it.:wtf:
Whoever that company is needs to know that's what you think it is too, or they will keep selling garbage like that as a norm.
