Combination wrenches, brands.

I never understood why people paid the premium for Snap-On...until I bought a couple - they feel way better in your hand, and the box-ends don't have as much thickness around them, so the fit more places better

I have to bring up Harbor freight. Just about the only place I buy tools anymore. Prices are a fraction of anywhere else & are lifetime guaranteed. For a shade tree mechanic like me who doesn’t wrench for a living, they are the perfect blend of quality and price.

And their higer end hand tools are pretty nice.

Many good advices. I will see, right now I want a set that feels good in my hand, but is also inexpensive. A set to have in the trunk of my '65 Dart, just to scare away bad luck. :D

I had a SK 1/2 combo and the shank was so thin, it hurt when you leaned on it, I swear i could have put an edge on it with a stone. Whats up with that? I gave up on expensive tools. Pittsburgh wrenches from HF. $14 for a 8 piece SAE set with a lifelong warranty and I have yet to break one. They are beefy and smooth, nothing like the crap Craftsman sand cast looking wrenches that rust inside the box end. They have extra long ones too. Favorite ratchet was a Kreauter (SP?) it was a fine tooth 3/8 drive German made. Had a handle on it that was almost square with rounded edges.

I a have full set of Proto spline drive wrenches. they are amazing but were $$$

The first third world tools I bought from a vendor selling from a trailer at a truck stop in Illinois...made in India. 1979 or so.

Before I left the lot I crawled under the trailer to adjust the brakes...broke a 9/16, went and got a free replacement
..broke that one, too. He replaced it but said I only get two. Broke that one a week later.

I still have that wrench and I keep it as a reminder of what not to buy.

Ok, I am probably silly but got curious about that pot metal wrench from Crescent, so I ordered one single 7/16 combination wrench since I am missing that size in my tool box. If pot metal I will not loose a whole lot. If it is good, I am fine with that too.

To update what I did, buy a 7/16" Crescent combination wrench. It has arrived, and is thin. Way smaller than the Craftsman I have. It is so thin that it sort of looks puny, and fragile. Like, oh, can I trust this ? I have been outside on the car with the wrench. What I can say is that this particular combination wrench hold fine for tightening bolts that has been loose. But, how it hold up for loosening a stuck nut or bolt, that is a different matter. I have measured in the opening, and it seems to be a little more open in the tip than down in the bottom, and it feels like there is a spring in it when tightening bolts hard. With the ring end this is not a problem.

I bought their 3/8 cordless ratchet. Love it, and it was cheap compared to others. 2 year warranty.

Well, if I am going with foreign, I can as well go with something that I know holds, even for professional use and I like and is used to, and support Ulf's country too at the same time. Amazon has them, Teng Tools, designed in Sweden, made in Taiwan. I am sure they can be ruined too. I mean, it is possible to ruin an Abrams Tank if you want to, nothing is indestructable.

One thing is what I want, probably Snap-On. But then, the money has to come from somewhere.

When it comes to wrenches and ratchets, I buy snap on. But NOT from the truck, you can save significant money by buying on ebay. When it comes to tools, I always try to buy high quality stuff. I have hopefully another 50 years of life left, by then ill be in my mid 80's. So the stuff has to last at least that long. LOL

You have an environmental friendly mind. Like me an cars, they should last my lifetime...

I have several cordless power tools that I bought from Harbor Freight. just stay away from the drillmaster line and you will be alright. notable is the Earthquake cordless impact and Hercules cordless drill, awesome tools. the impact is boatloads better than the Milwaukee's we have at work and they are all made in china.

I have all types of wrenches. Snap on, craftsman, SK etc. I also have a set of higher end Harbor Freight forged combination wrenches. This set is 3/8" to i think 1&1/4" for about $40. If you got a 20% off coupon even better yet. They also appear to have copied the Snap On flank drive on the box end of the wrench, as well as the thickness, smoothness, and heft of the Snap On wrench body. These feel good in your hand without being bulky. The chrome on em isnt perfect like snap on is, but its decent. I have used em like Cheater pipes by locking open and box ends together for more bolt leverage at the boneyard. Never broke one yet. Going to get a metric set to go with the SAE ones.
