I went to look at a 68 Charger yesterday. A nice looking 15 footer with a built 440 chassis dyno at 525 rwhp and a race built 727 with reversed valve body. Car was built for the strip but has been converted for street with full interior and not been raced in 15 years. There were bubbles under the paint in quite a few places and the 727 slammed in gear shifting up and down. The car ran like a scalded dog, cruised straight and true and stopped without pulling either direction. Price was not real bad at 28,500 but I walked away. The bubbles and possible rust underneath plus the hard hitting shifting really spoiled the deal for me. My gut tells me I made the right choice but my heart says that car should be in my garage now. What do you guys think did I make the right choice or will I regret my decision. By the way, my Swinger 340 isn't going anywhere.

As awesome as a 68 Charger RT is, sounds like you made the right choice. You never quite know what is under the bubbling paint.
 
The area around the rear window is a typical problem spot. B bodies are somewhat more expensive to build than A bodies. Rust is always worse than you think, or than it appears.

A stock valve body will easily fix the shifting issue.
 
Those are really nice cars as stated they haves a couple problem area's. But, that's like most other cars. Paint is the big ticket item. But, the value of them is up there.
 
I wouldn't walk away from a 68 Charger due to any type of transmission problem but body issues could cost a ton of money depending on your time/skill level. You just have to do the math and assume every bubble will require a patch panel and then add a couple more on top that you weren't expecting. Then figure out if that work plus the price of the Charger is worth more or less than buying a Charger that's already fixed up.
 
Thanks for backing me up guys. My skill set is all mechanical and I would have no problem changing the valve body in the trans even including swapping out the 727 for a 4 speed set up. When it comes to body work and paint I have no skills in that area what-so-ever. I would guess both rear quarters will need replaced and a full repaint to make the RT presentable. I don't think it would be cost effective for me to hire the body work and paint out on top of the purchase price.
