Acquired a pair of 70’s W-2 heads. I believe these are the race heads but there are some holes around the rocker pads I am not familiar with and wonder what is going on with these alien style holes. Appear to have been sitting on a shelf quit a while. Any input appreciated. The pictures have the date code and part numbers. Thanks

All W2’s are considered race heads. Even the “Econo” head with the cast in pedestals. Both the Econo and race head you have will port out the same. There an old head that can still make some very good power. The cost of the heads today is no longer super expensive via matching it up against the other offerings and there abilities.

Though, compared to today’s crop, maybe not so much anymore there the race head they used to be. I’m saving my monies up to have mine done up really well.

What brand of those rockers hold together the best. I heard T & D were ok and Harland Sharp not as good. Both are pricey

Those are VERY early castings. You need to get them very clean and have them pressure tested.

Rockers will be expensive no matter whose name is on the box. I would not use Harland Sharp rockers.

Look around as used stuff comes up once in a while. FABO member may have brand new offset rocker shafts. Then you'll need stands. Once ou get those, you may be able to get some Norris stainless steel rockers. Even the MP rockers are fine.

Brett Miller can do these heads since Ryan closed up shop :-(

The w2 is a great head. As for rockers being expensive, so are any roller rockers slapped on to any aftermarket head. Exhaust is the next area people complain about but if your buying headers then what's the arguments?
I am no expert but I have my thoughts that the w2 is on par with the trick flow area of small block heads.

I have run the econo and "race" style of w2. Switched to umm uhh indy :-l

The TF is not comparable to the W2. The W2 will out power it. Every time.

I have these stands that were for offset shafts and someone grilled then for std shafts but never finished them, 3 need finished. they fit the shafts tight and are used. I don't need them at this point, if you are interested PM me

Aaaaaagreed

@JoeDragster

Take a good look at the unobstructed intake port. They can both, TF vs W2, flow the same numbers but it’s not the same intake charge. (Amount)

Imagine for A minute there are two super long roller coasters side by side. The coasters will go into a tunnel. (This represents the intake port.)
Coaster ride 1 (TF) is 3 people wide. (Width of the port)
Coaster ride 2 (W2) is 5 people wide. (Width of the port)
Both coasters travel at 300 feet per minute. (Rate of air travel speed of the head.)
Start counting people as they go by you at the same time for 230 seconds.
(230 represents intake duration at .050.)

How many more people entered the tunnel?

Since coaster 2 (W2) has a (wider coaster) wider unobstructed port to allow more people in, the party at the last stop (cylinder) is bigger, louder and more bad *** than where coaster 1 (TF) ends up at.

The party hall where there going (cylinder) are both the same size. The more people you can cram into the hall (cylinder) the bigger the party and the louder the noise.
(More air & fuel for a bigger bang equals more HP & TQ.)

Those W-2 heads are junk...I'll PM you my address and I'll pay the shipping to save you the cost of buying those way too expensive T&D rockers (that are only OK).

I think that's a solid deal....

I already got the rocker stands so I should get the heads !
