How do you prime the oil pump?

-
I just ordered a brake pressure bleeder, I'll bet with the right adapters that would work.

I have used a garden sprayer with a 1/8 NPT to hose fitting on the end instead of the wand. Put your oil in the sprayer, pump it up, and turn over the engine. Is there a NPT fitting like the one for oil pressure that you can access the oil galleys?

I primed my engine several months ago by driving the shaft with a drill. The motor is now ready to put into the car. I've decided to make a primer for this motor and others by making a tank with a pump in it. I'll make an adapter to drain oil from the pan into a tank with that has a filter and pump inside, sort of like a fuel tank with internal pump. It will pump oil continuously by pumping oil through a hose into the sending unit port and then it will drain back into the tank automatically via the oil pan drain adapter. I'll turn the engine a few degrees every few minutes to make sure the rocker shafts get their share. Should work on just about any m otor as long as someone makes an adapter for the drain plug.

Um..........
there is no shaft in the new hemi motors.

I fabricated a pre-oiler from a propane cylinder based on some other homebuilt ones I saw on this site.
The 1/2" copper tube fits right inside a 1/2" pipe nipple. I epoxied it into the nipple. It sits about 1/4" off the bottom of the tank.
The 3rd fitting on the tank is a filler port.
I'll use it to prime the pump and also fill all the oil galleries

Ok . I see some good ideas here. But I went a different way. My motor is an 07 that has been sitting since 08. In 2010 I replaced the oil pan left it dry. On Monday last I pulled the plugs and poured some marvel oil in the cyl. This Monday I turned it by hand a few turns, drained what went past the rings closed the pan. Bought a twenty dollar garden weed sprayer,
Removed the spray nozzle and tip. After removing both plugs the end fits fairly tight. Left off filter. Cut back the feed line on sprayer on an angle about two inches. Poured in oil pumped it up pushed in hole pulled trigger. After about 2 minutes oil was coming out where the filter goes so installed the filter. Proceeded to fill for about 30 seconds oil started back feeding from hole. Installed sensor. Removed plug and did the same to top hole. Took about two minutes before oil was bleeding back. Replaced plug. Today I turned it about ten turns by hand, hooked up a pressure gauge, power to the starter. It took less the 5 seconds oil flowing and 30 lbs.

So twenty dollar pump and less then a half hours work.

Good job. Will keep this in mind. Bill

This is a simple rig from Harbor Freight, I think it was around $12. It took two quarts to have pressure. I connected it to the oil pressure sensor port.

This is a good thread. I rebuilt my 07 hemi and couldn't get it to suck up any oil either. Dropped about a quart of oil down the bottom 1/2"npt port (mine has a 1/8" npt for the pressure sensor and a 1/2"npt that's plugged) and hand cranked it backwards at the harmonic balancer. It pulled that oil right in! Rolled it over and BINGO! Oil pressure. THANKS, brothers and sisters :)

I need to update my profile pic!!!

I have a mityvac brake pressure bleeder. I just used one of the male quick disconnect fittings from one of the master cap adaptors(which is 1/4"npt) and bush it to 3/8" npt. Pressure it up to 15lbs and rotate the crank by hand to lubricate the cam and main bearings. If that helps.

Here's mine....

Pull the ignition fuse, overfill the engine so the oil level is higher than the pump and turn the engine over until you see oil pressure. Or, after it pressurizes, start the engine check for pressure, shut off the engine and drain out the excess oil.

So I am having a little trouble understanding this tread. If I reading this correct I prime the oil system thought the bottom port pre filter. Rotate the engine by hand. Will this prime my oil pump as well?

Yes, it will lubricate the oil passages in the engine for pre start up. The oil pump is a gear pump so if you rotate the crank the opposite direction, you then will force oil back through the pump down the pickup tube and into the pan and therefore priming the pump. Hope that helps.

Looks like you added a oil filter after the tank, good idea. If a person uses the oil sending unit location to fill engine. Dose that oil go through the engine oil filter first ? Was thinking of building a similar tank to yours, but am worried about how clean the inside of the tank would be.

Yes I added a filter. Didnt want any possible dirt going direct to the bearings. No, the oil pressure sending ports are after the filter.

cant it just be primed through the sensor port? cuz i cant reach the 2 ports on the side. got lots of **** in the way to access them at this point. have oil pressure tank setup for 4an fitting to sensor port already. pump is dry. was hoping i could just hand turn the crank or start crank it till pressure builds at pump. along with priming tank on sensor to engine bearings to keep them coated till primed.
