I cut 2 of my fingers to the bone in 6th grade (not a cutoff wheel incident, though) - had no feeling in the tip of either - one came back a little over sensitive after a few years...the other came back about 20 years later...but it's weird having a numb finger.

The safety guard on the grinder with the cutoff wheel really isn't that much of a nuisance, and they're nasty when they let go - after seeing a few pics, I put them back on last year
