Just wondering if there is a written NHRA rule about a racer backing out of the tree due to rain? Was at the ET Finals in Seattle. Overheard one racer talking about it raining, to the point that the track was wet, at the top end of the track. He managed to stop without incident. Sadly another racer did not fare so well. I was about 100' out and I felt a few drips while two racers, in the Pro class, were in the water box. By the time they staged it was raining, not hard but enough that the track was OBVIOUSLY wet. The starter let them go. Guy in the right lane immediately got out of it. Car in the left lane stayed on the throttle a bit longer..and ended up hitting the wall head on. He had enough momentum that the car spun around and hit the wall with the rear as well. Driver was not injured. Car (an A-body) had cosmetic damage. Track allowed the two racers to rerun their pass later that day.
I always thought that the driver was responsible for their own safety. That in a case like this you could simply back out.
Or is this something that each track can have their own "rule"?

I don't know but "common sense" is that officials should stop the race

I would have backed my junk outta there. I've done it before.

Man IJ. I missed you there. Watched the same incident. There were all kinds of opinions on this one. Normally there are no do overs. Once staged and launched its a done deal. Others apparently watched the start line guy wipe the rain from his arms at staging and still others claim to have been waving from the stands to stop because it was flat out raining at mid track. Speaking with the announcers they stated that they avoided even bringing up the incident to help avoid controversy. It was an unfortunate incident that I'm not sure there is one clear cut answer for. I was very unimpressed with the safety standards applied to this event this year. Oh well, still had fun and we took the championship.

Norwalk has the best set up I’ve ever seen that th y put in a couple of years ago. Any sign of danger, engine smoke that shouldn’t be there, or Mother Nature they have a light bar with yellow lights and when they see any sign of danger flip it on. Then they worry about it he reruns. Safety first.

The rule is if you take the tree you accept the race.

Not sure what the officials were thinking with rain obviously coming down.

This has happened many times at Vegas. No rain on the line but raining on the top end. Usually the safety crew stages at the top end and radios the line if problems arrive.
Dust and debris from blowing wind is more common, and causes problems if so, they will re-run you. This run I went 4.93 seconds in the quarter. Yeah trash blowing from a wind gust tripped the lights. They re-ran us.

4.93! Wow! Must have been one hell of a tail wind!

Yeah, went several 100 feet and saw my win light come on ??? Got to the slip booth and they said go right back to the start line.

I backed out of the beams, with rain drops falling and got DQd. Other guy went anyway, and crashed his car in the lights. My safety and my cars safety before a win light.
