This seemed like a straight forward process but it is not going as I had envisioned.

Removing my driveshaft, I had one cap fall and naturally cannot find one bearing anywhere. So I got a replacement U-joint where I figured to simply replace the two caps that mount between the driveshaft and rear.

I figured the clips would be put into place first and simply slide the shaft in place from there. But it seems to be too tight to allow that. By putting one clip on in order to get both caps in place, I now cannot seem to get the second clip in place.
Is there a simple way of getting this in place?

I always get one started without the clip say halfway then get the shaft aligned so it will start in the second cup and press/tab/hammer them in place then put the clips on.

Best to do it right, replace the whole u-joint with the new one.

Replace the joint. There is no guarantee that different brand joints will have the same cross, especially in this Chinesiofiscationized world

Also sometimes you can bend/ spring the sides of the yoke, making it difficult or impossible to insert the clip. I sometimes put the thing in a vise, and take a big punch and tap from the inside towards the outside of the yoke to "spring" it a bit open. When you move the joint in the yoke, you can feel what you have done. It will "loosen up" a bit

okay... .so do i need a press to get these out of the driveshaft? seems a gear puller is something i will need.

I would clean the whole thing first; and again after it was apart. After you're finished assembling, check to make sure the caps stick out the same on both sides. And turn the joint in the caps to make sure the caps aren't in too far causing the joint to bind. The clips should barely have enough room to go on. You may have to knock the caps outward slightly.

Yes, i was thinking the same thing. it's snug after the initial installation.
