I would clean the whole thing first; and again after it was apart. After you're finished assembling, check to make sure the caps stick out the same on both sides. And turn the joint in the caps to make sure the caps aren't in too far causing the joint to bind. The clips should barely have enough room to go on. You may have to knock the caps outward slightly.
