I have a1986 Dodge Ram D100 that has a .225 slant six. My mechanic said that the piston rings were fried, and would probably be better off just rebuilding it. Its burning a quart of oil every 60 miles and has bluish smoke coming out of the tailpipe. A machine shop gave me an estimate of between $1500 & $1900, but I have to pull the engine. Provided there's no nasty surprises when they take it apart. The Shop has a good rep and reviews and has been there a long time. Does this price seem right? Thanks

I paid $1700 to get my 340 rebuilt so that seems like it's in the ballpark. I removed the engine and took it in and they rebuilt and assembled it.

Damn good price. I just paid $700 to have a block cleaned and checked, one cylinder sleeved, bore and cam bearings installed

have you checked the prices of a reman long block? take lots of pictures before and during removing the motor from your vehicle.

If this helps, currently restoring my 67 Dart (and driving the forum guys crazy with all my questions) and had its original /6 rebuilt just a few months ago. Bored and all new internals except the crank....$1800

I say that's more than reasonable. Find out what all they include first so there'll be no surprises.

Thanks guys! I have another question if ya'll can help me out. I am trying to figure out what year the engine was manufactured. It is blue, so i read on another fourm that blue was the color from 1970- early 1983. There is worn out sticker on the head cover that reads 4387094

pull the head and check the bores. If they are smooth, Id suspect something else. Did he do a compression or a leakdown test? If your burning a quart an hour, and your bores are not ditched, I think your guides or valve seals are gone. A valve job is like $70 for a 6 if you take the head in. How long do you want to keep it? 81-86 is going to be a hydro lifter motor. Hydros had a head that had large pushrod holes for lifter removal, the earlier solid heads usually had smaller pushrod holes. also something about a protrusion on the head by the alternator that was hydro head specific

FWIW.
I completely rebuilt my 1964 225 and remember listing the costs in my resto thread.

Not Fast, just "Less Slow"

The car runs very well and I've put about 7000 miles on it.
Sorry, I really need to update my resto, it's 3 years behind.

The head looks like it is from '76 - '79. So maybe somebody has done an engine swap already.

on the top deck of the crankcase, between the alternator and the valve cover is a pad that should have numbers / letters stamped into it.
That can be decoded to determine when the engine was built. Although Chrysler lost diligence on the stamping in the later years.

The original slant in my '83 D150 is painted black.
