Need to find a starter. Engine has 14: 1 compression. What are the best options. What are you guys using?

Chrysler mini hi torque Denso. 1.87 HP out of compact 8lbs. Great w headers. See post #13, and #16

I should have been more clear. I meant current, small starter. Not the old, giant, 95 pound hunk of crap starter that came on the earlier stuff.

I meant mini starter. I always think when talking about a 14:1 engine it won't use that big, clunky starter. But I should have been more clear.

Mopar mini denso off any magnum 3.9V6 5.2V8 or 5.9V8 will work just fine. I grabbed 2 at my local boneyard for $20 each off the starter motor shelf. Both were remanned recently still had stickers and fresh paint on them.

Some of these boneheads on this forum don't think I listen to them because I'm busting their nuts all the time, but definitely some good advice was to go down to the wrecking yard and go find a truck like my truck and pull the starter out of it. I took it home and sprayed and wiped it with WD-40 three times and it came out looking like new. Now my 73 duster starts just like my 98 truck...
Perfect and fast every time...
Edit, $22 with environmental fee...

That $79 remand parts store mini starter gave me trouble until it finally died...

I usually buy one for a mid 90's Dakota. Used or New, Never an issue.

The snout on the 5.7 manual starter looks like the older "big dawg 2 ton tessies" that everybodies pulling off. Bolt pattern looks the same too. 1.7KW 2.28HP isnt too shabby either Not many of em if any have hit my local boneyards yet. That's why I went with the mini denso. Plentiful, inexpensive, durable, powerful, light weight, tiny. 1.4KW 1.87 HP about as much HP as a stock monster sized 60s-70s big block starter. Only thing that seems to go bad w the denso over time is the solenoid contactor. Easy fix, rock auto has the contactor parts for cheap.

Dartlove might actually benefit more though from using a 5.7 manual trans starter since he has a 14.1 compression V8. The 5.7 hemi starter has more HP than the dakota/ram starter. 2.28 HP vs 1.87 HP
Thanks mopardude318 for bringing that to the table.

No idea a hemi era starter still fit an old school mopar? Any benefit vs the "normal" mopar mini?
Very cool!

The starter from an 05-08 Ram with 5.7 and a manual trans is physically smaller then all the rest of the common mini starters because it is a coaxial starter—the motor axis is the same as the drive axis—which makes it more compact than the regular mini starters, which are offset starters. (The motor axis is outboard of drive axis).

Unlike the other starters, this one has one of its 2 mounting holes threaded. Drill out the threaded hole so it’s plain.

I really like it. How do these hold up over the long run compared to a mini denso though? I mean a mini denso spins em over with some authoriy, and is pretty reliable and inexoensive. These 5.7 hemi starters may just be the bees knees from a size and HP standpoint. Looks similar to the old Delco Remys Problem I have on my end is finding one out by me yet. Eventually Hemi trucks will hit the boneyard here. Looking like a stick shift one is gonna be hard to find though. Seems everybody these days wants an effin slushbox.

Well, now I have to go buy another starter!! I love the looks of that. Just need to make sure it will actually clear my headers.

Awesome description and pics. Thanks! As long as the solenoid doesn't interfere with headers...seems like a win win

Thanks goes to slantsixdan. He recommends the Remy remans, which go for about a buck twenty.

If the denso mini will clear, then this thing will for sure. Look at the pix

Looking at the pictures, it doesn't look like the clock exactly the same. It's a bit hard to tell in the picture, but I'm looking at the opening for the gear. Looking at that, the two starters appear to be laying at the same angle.

If so, my headers will be really close to that starter. If not hitting it.
