What is this tube for? I have a oval shaped hole in the trunk of my 71' Dart in this location, but never had this in my pile of parts during the restoration.

Kalifornia emissions crap. Bunch of fuel line tubing attached under there. 4 lines if I can remember correctly, and it goes thru a slot in the framerail back to the gas tank. Make a flat metal plate with a foam gasket with holes in it that line up with the existing screw holes in the trunk extension. Then screw it in over the hole using the same type button head screws that holds on the rubber trunk floor gasket that goes around the fuel filler neck.

Thanks Mat! That explains why I didn't have that part as my car was a Canadian made Dart.

Prob a standard stamped hole, and the non cali cars had a plate bolted over it. I am guessing on that one though.

It was a mid year addition in 71. Its called EEC I think. If your car didnt have it the hole would not be there.
I have a late build 71 swinger that has it. I just parted an early build 71 swinger that did not. BTW, fuel tank is different as well.

It's a California emissions thing but it has no negative effect on engine performance. It essentially just routes gas fumes back into the crankcase instead of into the atmosphere. My rule of thumb is if it's already there, just leave it alone because it's a good thing for the environment. If it's not there, there's no reason to go through the trouble of sourcing the parts. Just block it off like Mat said.
