Where Are the Tree-Huggers When You Need One?
This sad, sad story that my best friend from California related to me last night brought to mind those who chain themselves to trees in the forest to protect the groves from logging and other development.
Diego (not his real name) lives in a large apartment complex. His modest one-bedroom unit rents for $1,500 monthly. His tiny rear patio is home to a pair of mature avocado trees that shade his bedroom window and drop delicious fruit from their branches. Near the apartment fish pond, a third avocado tree bears fruit and provides welcome shade from the sun as well.
Diego comes home one day and all three trees have been cut down to the stumps. Now the summer sun is beating down on his bedroom window and who can afford to purchase avocados in the store presently, since the marked price has skyrocketed the past year?
Diego approaches the apartment management to inquire what the motivation was for such a dastardly deed. The manager explained it was a liability issue, after one of the tenants complained about being struck from a falling avocado! This is not a joke.
If it were me, I would have put in my 30-day notice right then and there.
