Butchered W2 Strip Dominator Intake

Made a delivery to a machine shop today, guy gave me a Holley Strip Dominator (300-17) W2 intake that had been buried amongst other engine parts for years. Its been butchered and welded on. Someone tried to extend the runner dividers into the plenum and squared the top of the ports to use on a regular head. Otherwise looks OK? Maybe some grinding to clean up the plenum and epoxy/grinding of the ports can save it?

Interesting ports ....maybe they were planning on doing a full boogy rectangle port job and never finished the intake ?
Did the guy have the heads ?
 
That's an easy fix. Fill in the roof with epoxy and make it back to round and clean up the plenum with a couple of hours of grinding.

Squaring off the top was an early 1980's trick. Not sure it worked as I didn't bother testing it. If the top needed to be square, I made the port square.

That's an easily repaired manifold.
 
Gotta be cheaper to find another than pay a shop $100/hr to repair that one correctly.

If you can do it yourself then thats another thing....
 
I reworked an M1 single plane with speadbore into a square bore with the epoxy , pics and post is somewhere in someone's thread elsewhere a while back, (haven't gotten to try it yet so it, this one would just be labor on my part) I can clean up the plenum no prob, make it good. The port exits I could either leave or like YR said, make em round again. Or pass it on to someone who wants to mess with it?
 
Look for "Splashzone" epoxy or Belzona epoxy.... used everyday by top engine builders to repair heads, intakes and blocks.
 
No way in hades I would trust anybody's epoxy on that thing. Now, if you know someone who can weld it up and start over, then that's a different story. Wall hanger.

The problem with welding that much of the port is all the moving and shrinking you'll get. It's hard to control and even if you are careful and keep the heat even you can still get cracking in weird places. The flanges will pull way out...I've seen .060 and the guy was careful.

I use an epoxy I get from Brownells. It's never come loose.

No, I said I would actually use filler and not weld it. Filler works.

I'd fix that intake in about 2 hours. Then the port work to finish it would take 8-10 hours like any other intake manifold.

Whenever I've epoxied intake runners I drill shallow (3/16" deep) holes at 90 degrees into the runner to give the epoxy something to 'bite' into other than just the casting. Maybe it's overkill but I've never had it move on me.
