Evan and Howard came over late this afternoon. Evan wanted me to help tear down his Datsun 280 engine and give my opinion on what all it needs. Was gettin water in the oil from somewhere. Just a little, but not bad. I guess any is bad. lol Evan's been here enough to know where all the tools are so I just turned them monkeys loose while I played around with the 170 @AbodyTim so graciously gave me.

I knocked the balancer off and replaced the timing chain and sprocket set. Was running a tap through the threads in the balancer before I put the puller on it and promptly dropped the tap into the water pump hole into the water jacket. It hit bottom. lol Then after I got the timing cover off, I cut the ends of the oil pan gasket off and one side fell into the oil pan. LMAO.

I wasn't planning on pulling the pan, but I laid it down and yanked it off. I was going back and forth helping Evan and Howard when they got hung up. Got the pan off and the piece of oil pan gasket out. Since I was now "THERE" I pulled a rod and main. They look great. I stood the slant up in its nose and shook it around and believe it or don't the tap fell out on the shop floor. LOL SO I got both offending pieces out.

Gotta wait till payday for the oil pan gasket, but that's ok. Got Evan's engine torn down and it looks good. He just wants a simple hone and re-ring and bearing. He's gonna get a new head since he's still at O'Reilly and can get the whole thing.......cam, followers valves and all cheap. Found the head gasket "slightly" blown so there was "THAT". So we'll have him up and runnin pretty quick and teach the boys a little somethin too. Howard sneaked in a picture when we weren't lookin. LOL

What , no mosqitoes ?

Tell us about the 67 to 72 gm step side truck....

When I was a kid, there was a nearly new one across the street and I wanted one real bad.
Bought the model and painted it just like it (well to the best of my ability, brush painting a two tone butterscotch and white wasn't too easy for an 8 year old)

That belongs to a really good friend whose a Gray, Georgia police officer. It has a old school 350 a local hot rodder built for him years ago with a BW T10 4 speed. He got too excited a while back and blew a head gasket with his heavy right foot. It sat up for like two years and he asked me about fixin it so I told him to drag it over here. He already had some new aluminum heads to put on it. So I yanked the heads of of it and here it sits. He found out after I got the heads off his step father sold his heads, so now he's having to save back up for some more. Truck's pretty solid. I am sure I'll inherit doin as much work on it as I feel like doin. Needs a rocker on the passenger's side, a radiator support, which is in the bed and a few other small rust repairs, new wood in the bed of course, but really the old thing is pretty solid. It's a 71. We've talked about him buying my 396 but I think he's gonna leave the 350 in it.

Good times but color me jealous. :D Wish I still had a 2 car garage to work in. :p

I'm proud of it, but I tell you what, I wish I had listened to everybody that said "get a bigger one". LOL

The good thing about these is though, they are real easy to add on to should a sack of money fall outta the sky. lol

that looks like a cool step side pick up ….what is it ?

Nice. Some of the best memories I have are hanging out with friends and family in the garage workin on stuff. I don't take those time for granted anymore like I did when I was a kid.

Wish i could get away with a garage like that. One heavy snowfall and its a pancake.
Great to hang out and share some good old fellowship:thumbsup:
Guess i should go and see if my 3/4” impact will run in the ground screws for my tarp building.

any pics of the 170 ?

Ok, as promised. Here's the big bad 170 with its new timing set.

Here's Evan's little Datsun motor.

The warmed up Ford 400 I am going to put in Gladys.

The 396 I am going to put in "something" unless somebody wants it worse than I do before I find something. Gotta repaint the water pump. lol

Here's the head off the 170. I am going to do a How To on a basic valve job/valve lap in a few days when this heat breaks.

It's out of a 280Z. And no, I am just replacing the timing set, rebuilding the oil pump with a high pressure spring and doing a basic valve job on the head. It's going to be a spare for the Valiant.
