Clutch problem I think

Sounds like the pressure plate has counterweight. That means the more RPM's you turn, the more pressure plate pressure you have.

What clutch is it? If it's a Borg & Beck, they can have no CW, 3 roller CW or 6 roller CW.

I can't think of a time where in your application I'd use more than 3 roller CW maximum.
Performance clutches for that application are few and far between. Originally a 9 1/2" clutch. There are some scalloped pressure plate so you can use a 10" disc. Brewers has those and they were used in vans back in the day.
