So the trans went out in spectacular fashion in our shop truck. She let ALL the fluid out in about 5 seconds and has a lot of metal on the drain pan plug.

Today i got the trans out, not fun as its about 5 feet long and heavy as...

It looks to be a 727 but im not sure as my experience is only with 904s. So what is the (base model auto) trans? I need to order a rebuild kit.

Also i thought it would be obvious as to where the fluid came out of but i dont see anything that stands out as the leak. I thought it would be the front pump seal but that is dry?
Any ideas where it all dumped from? The entire trans is covered, so its hard to tell where the problem was..

I will be tearing it apart tomorrow and will get some pics of the carnage for ya!

It has a square pan.

Is there any identity aspects i should be looking for?

It either the 42RH and 46RH transmission. Since it is a 4x4 it is likely the 46RH.

They had a factory TSB for failure of the transmission cooling lines causing massive fluid dump.

94 would most likely be a 360 magnum.
My 94 has a 360. But its a stickshift.
Had it about 3 years, still havent done anything with it. Runs nice and drives well. My yard truck.
I wouldnt tear it out until leak is pinpointed.

Be especially careful with taking the overdrive apart. It needs a special tool that has to be used with a press for the overdrive spring.
That coil spring will take your head off! I guarantee that the overdrive unit will be a mess with the metal in the pan.
You will also need the special spline tool to align overdrive unit for reassembly.

The big question here is it a 2500 or 1500? the 2500s had the bigger axles in the bigger transmission but not the massive transmission that the later diesels and V tens got..

The over drive is lethal when taking it apart. I found that out and luckily didn't get hurt.

It will be an A500/42rh which replaced the 904. Or a A518/46rh which replaced the 727. You can tell by looking the pan, the pans have the same bolt pattern as the old 3 speeds they replaced.

It has no badging. So im thinking its a 1500?

We got the truck for 400 bucks and tossed most of it in the scrap bin. The only part i haven't upgraded or fixed is the trans.

Special tools... dammit.. got a part number for those or a place that wont charge an arm and a leg?

I will dig mine out to find the Miller numbers, and get back to you

5 lug rims 1500. 8 lug 2500

I want to say its a front 44 and a rear 60 but i cant remember and im not at the shop.

How deep can i go into the trans before it lets loose and trys to kill me?

You can remove the overdrive case from the trans, it is when disassembling the overdrive that the danger comes into play. The rest of the trans is basically a 727 or 904 in the case of a v6

Thought I read somewhere that there was something special about the gasket between the transmission and overdrive. Something about it acting like a shim and not just a seal.

Make sure to remove the check valve in the cooler lines, they clog and kill the transmission.
Do all the updates, turn up the psi, replace manual valve for full flow version that keeps the converter flowing in all
