on the top deck of the crankcase, between the alternator and the valve cover is a pad that should have numbers / letters stamped into it.
That can be decoded to determine when the engine was built. Although Chrysler lost diligence on the stamping in the later years.

The original slant in my '83 D150 is painted black.
