What is the most that you usually keep?
When I got my first 8 3/4" axle, I was anxious to gather up some gearsets to have around. The idea of having a 2.76 for long trips and a 4.10 for drag racing seemed great.
I never warmed up to drag racing though. I'm not fast enough and my car is too heavy. I do like road trips but the super tall 2.76 ratio makes for sluggish starts.
I currently have 6 3rd members.
2.76 open
3.23 open
3.23 SG
3.55 SG
3.91 open
3.91 SG.
I have sold off some over the years but I seem to stumble on others to replace them.
I have 8 3/4" axles in 2 of my cars and 2 of the project cars are slated to get them as well.
These must be durable because most are equipped with original gears and I have never broken any 3rd member so far.

Zero. Lol if never owned a 8 3/4 I've had several 81/4s I had a dana 60 for my dart at one time but sold it decided to go a different direction I'm glad I did now it was gonna require a tub job and everything.

In 2014 I towed home a '67 Chrysler 300 using a dolly with the front wheels on it. It was hard to make turns with the car. At home I found out it had a 3.23 SG diff in it. Ipulled the 3rd member and sold it to a guy across the country for $400 plus $168 to ship it !

Both my 72 Satellite and 72 Dart have 742 3.55 SG in them.
I have around 10 more center chunks in the trailer ranging from 3.91 to 2.76 and a couple 4.56 gear sets. Have a 741 2.91 SG. All but one are SG.
Probably have sold around 25 more over the years.
Here is the one in my Dart.

I sold two 2.76 open ones before I moved earlier this year. Currently have 3.55 SG in both my 68 and Jake's 65. The 3 spares are 3.23 open, 3.23 SG and the newest one is a 3.91 SG that we just picked up from another member that is going in Jake's 65.

I have an 8 3/4” in every A body I own, all 742 cases. I have a 3:73 and a 3:91 under the bench, both SG. I also have an extra complete axle assembly with small bolt, and an extra set of LBP axles, going to sell all the extra stuff.

Only one is an open carrier.

I have 5 in various vehicles, an empty 489, a couple 2.76 open ones on a shelf. Most of mine are the 741 type.... have never broke one.

I also have an NOS clutch type rebuild kit that dad brought home in his lunchbox in the early 70's. Going to finally use it when I build the 68 in 4-5 years.

I am working on a deal to swap an 8 1/4 axle for a 8 3/4 with 741 3.55 open one of my friends has that's installed under a ford truck bed that's been made into a camper!
Plan is to rebuild the Garlits bought SG and transplant into the 3.55 chunk or swap those gears around.

1. The 742 3.23 that's in the Duster. That said, keeping an eye out for another one to set up with some 3.91-4.11 gears for track use.

Currently have 2) 742 4.10 clutch SG in 67 Barracuda & 65 Dart + a solo 741 open 2.94.
Had a handful but sold all for cash to finish Dart....

Likely the reason you never broke one is because you never have drag raced. Or don't. I wouldn't see one breaking with street tires. Try this a couple dozen times: First get some big Hoosier wrinkle wall slicks, do a nice fat burn off in a wet box until there's smoke rolling up into the telephone wires. Then creep up to a surface that if you walked crossed it with your tennis shoes you would probably lose a shoe.. Then rev your dual-quad stroker up to about five grand and sidestep the clutch... (Of course I would expect you to have a 489 case spooled with all the best brand new parts set up by a professional)
