Hello all,
I bought a 340 last year and am finally ready to install it.
I took off the oil pan and see that the oil pick up easily rotates. The motor is a pretty hopped up one with a lot of after market parts like the deep Milodon oil pan and much more.
Should the pick up just rotate when I grab it? I'm thinking no, and it should be snug and adjusted to some height but not sure since its after market.
The pic shows the pickup after I moved it to that position.

The pickup should not rotate freely, the threads are NPT & should be pulled up as tightly as possible with the pickup parallel with the pan rail of the block. Don't go gorilla on it, clean the threads on the pick & the pump, put a dab of Loctite on it the pickup & call it good.

Thanks for the replies. Jam nut sounds like a good idea. A little loctite doesn't sound like a bad idea either.
Thanks!

You may..........simply........need..........to screw it in one more turn. IE yes, you'll have to pull the pump.

If the pickup moved that far it was set wrong to start with.

That style of pickup is designed kind of like the OE pick up. By that I mean you set the pick up to just touch the pan. That's what that little strap is for on the pick up. It should just touch the pan. And if that was the case, it would never turn that far.

So set the pick up so it touches the pan and run it.

I don't know how you use a jamb nut on pipe thread.

Sounds to me like 1 more turn is needed, as said. Pull the pump and try.

Ditto on a jam nut on a pipe thread.... no way you can properly size it.....????

I've done it before on a different application by trial and error with a pipe tap on a nut to get it to screw on the thread a bit deeper each time until it cinches down in the correct orientation. This was not an oil pickup on a motor, surprising what you will try in order to get a production line up and running at 2am. I don't think I would try that though in this instance. Sure as hell it's going to loosen up at some point. I think I'd be inclined to get it in the correct orientation and weld a tab on that goes to one of the main cap or windage tray bolts to hold it where it needs to be.

It can be loose and not matter as long as it's not sloppy loose. If the pick up is touching the pan like I said above, it can turn.
