I have a hot rod with early 8&3/4 rear that has cotter key and large nut holding rear hub, and i need to change to park brake style backing plates. It has 11x2.5 drums will a newer, style backing plate and rigging fit? Thanks.

Welcome aboard cool car! I love hot rods. I don't have the answer to your question but I'm sure there will be someone who does know shortly. Just wanted to say welcome to the site!

Won’t fit. You have a tapered axle that requires a dog bone to get the hub off. The drums are not available anymore which is the biggest issue. You’re going to have to replace the complete axle with 65 or newer. If you want to keep the axle, it can be retrofitted with newer drums. There’s a thread on the web explaining how to do it. Measure the width and maybe we can tell you what’s in it. Craig

Thanks for the welcome. The drums are good shape, the space from flange face to backing plate is 3". I have tool to get hub off.

thank you for the welcome. The drums are good and i have the tool to take off hub.I was hoping i could just replace backing plates that have e-brake system and put drums back on. ( too easy huh)

I would think that you should be able to use pre 65 brakes if it truly is an 8 3/4. Are you sure that it is an 8 3/4 and not the early 8 1/4 (from the 50s, it looks just like an 8 3/4)? If you don't have park brake capability with the rear brakes the rear end must have come from something in the 50s (not sure when they wen away from the park brake on the trans but I would guess 58 or 59) that had the park brake on the trans output, and I beleive they were all 8 1/4s.
