Yes agreed back to the Magnum heads! Aren't these the ones that you have from which gained your famous new handle of "318 has valves that will fly"??...I mentioned it twice, same as you here, twice. Now, back to Mag heads on LA
yes, remanufactured fully loaded from Odessa. 300 for the set from a FABO member here. I just put the hughes spring kit on them, and I massaged the bowls and intake ports a bit.
EQ mag heads can be bought for 590 for a bare set through Jegs with LA or Mag bolt pattern, same price. They take stock mag valve train. Basically you can get the valves/rockers for free, literally. Add Hughes spring kit and you are set for some great flowing heads to .550 lift.

Did the heads already have valves and Springs and you just changed the springs? Was the 300 including shipping or any transportation? And how much were the springs and shipping? I'm not even going to get into how much time you put into massage of them LOL and the drill bits and sandpaper and lalala that you had to spend money on and had to have the drills and all that stuff...

Wait a minute! Hold the fort! Didn't you have to pay to have a couple valve seat pins checked out or something? Hence your handle..
300 fully loaded, ready to bolt on, and I met the member to pick them up. I chose to change to the Hughes spring kit (springs, retainers made for clearance, and keepers). Didn't put a hole lot of time into these, but it was my pleasure. I'd say I'm 600 into them with new seat.

So cool at 550 for the heads and what else do you have to do or change or buy to make them work?
you reminded me of the seat, so 600. I bought push rods, 99 bucks. Most aftermarket cams/lifters have oil through lifters. total 699.

So I guess it's back to how much difference would the mag heads make? If it is 30 to 40hp more that would be great and worth it to me. It would certainly be easier to just change the heads, intake, etc. I think could get it all done for less than $1k vs $2k and more work for changing to a 5.9 with cam and heads.

So cool $699 and I guess we should at this point mentioned since it took you hours? Possibly days of grinding? I know you like to talk about flow so just in your wildest best guesstimate what do you think those are flowing?...
If you LA heads are stock, you'll see a gain.
IDK. Honestly, if I gave my speech on this it would derail this thread. But let me say this, my original plan, 3 years ago, was to put the 318 magnum in my '74. These heads were going to be direct replacement and I was only to have 300 into them. These were NEVER bought with intentions of going on a LA. Things change, you know that.

And again I'll say it one more time there is no way in hell I would have put one dime into any cast iron head if I would have known I could have had aluminum heads with the bigger valve and springs and whole nine yards sent to my door for $820! This is all brand new price point for something like this...
I won't even start the conversation of all the beneficials of aluminum....
Like you said three years ago this wasn't an option for me... Or at least not one I knew about...

Yes, they are stock x heads with 202 valves. Measured to 68 cc so 8.2 to 8.4 compression so I thought if nothing else they should be good for .5 compression more?
yes, you'll gain compression and some lift with the 1.6 rockers. Flow vs stock X 2.02 I believe would still favor the Mag head. EQ mag heads would even gain more flow, and can be bought for 590 for a set through jegs bare casting. They take stock mag head valve train. 590 plus 200 hughes spring kit and valves/rockers would be free, literally. EQ's come in either bolt pattern
yes, the procomps are a good deal when they have their sales. But to buy and bolt on I couldn't.....
….. I would have to question the quality of the springs, valves, are they sealing, ya know. Even on sale, I'd be well over a grand when I was done

The EQs could be a good option. If I bought them bare, do they need any work done to them or just check fitment as I'm putting them together ?
Check fitment, lap the valves. Many here have used them. You can buy them fully loaded as well. they are beefier in the areas that the factory mags crack, and they are also beefier at the pedestals for the rockers. They are Aussie heads, and have a good rep.

And here I would question pins holding in my valve seats but to each their own...
I question Odessa as well..... that's why I cut a seat out and had a machinist inspect their pinned fix.
