Last month I listed a broken down riding mower, a garden trailer that needs tires, & aluminum ramps to load the mower in a truck on Kingwood Yard Sales for $250.00. An individual texted me about it saying he would send me a check & wait for it to clear before picking the stuff up. A few days later, he sends a text that his secretary put the wrong amount on the check but sent it anyway. I received a check last Thursday for $1465.15 in the mail. The wife & I had plans for the weekend so I put him off until Monday. Warning bells started going off early on because of all of the vague text messages & no other way to contact him.

Well, Monday I went to my bank & was told the check was bogus. I also took the check to the bank it was written on & they too confirmed that the check was bogus. The banks suggested that I contact the FBI about this, which I did. I sent the FBI copies of all of the information I had. The agent I dealt with said to contact my local police department & turn all of the information to them. I forwarded the incident number, along with the police officers name & badge number. Maybe between the Feds & my local police they can bust one of these no good scammers.

My suggestion to all of our upright & honest members is, BUYER & SELLER BEWARE because there is all kinds of scum trying to beat us out of money.

He was hoping you'd send him the difference. LOL

RRR, I figured that out right away. Unless I know someone well, I'm not sending them anything because of the scams & ID thefts that happen everyday. This isn't my first trip down the track. LMAO

Unfortunately, some don't make much effort in making an honest living. Next! 65'

Whats the point? The guy didnt want the mower, but wanted you to send him back the difference? Man how stupid does the scammer think we are?

OP I'm disappointed. Surprised you have not heard of this and surprised you took it seriously for 4 seconds.

Many years ago there was a scam my friend was suckered into. It said how to win at bingo. Send $2.00 and a stamped self addressed envelope. She did that. Guess what reply came back. Keep playing. Lol. Kim

I had a "large" check sent to me (via FedEx signature) for an airplane we were selling (that we advertised on an aircraft web-site) , it was written on the Chase Manhattan Bank, the FBI got that one. Never did find out if they caught up with them. We finally sold the plane to a local individual.

The FBI SHOULD take those cases. After all, the second the perp places that check in the mail, it becomes the federal crie of mail fraud.

I can answer that question with a short version story of one of our computer service customers.
Caller told her they would deposit 3k in her bank account if she would help them out and go to Walmart to purchase 100 ITunes gift cards and call them back wit the serial numbers.
They told her they were banned from already buying to many. (WTF?:D)
Well, she did it and they told her that 10 of them were no good so go buy 10 more. (she did)
THEN they told her they needed control of her computer to make sure the money they deposited actually went to her. (again WTF?)
THEN they told her to log into her bank so she could see the deposit.

Guess what happened next?
Yep, her account was emptied of the few thousand she had in it AND she just bought them 110 ITunes gift cards.

They should, but rarely do.
One of the reasons we pay taxes is for the protection of the US Gov. is what an actual IRS agent told me once.
Well I sure do see a lot of epic fails.

I would have messaged him back that I was afraid to send the difference, but he could come and pick it up in person

My boss got banned from buying Amazon gift cards because he was buying too many. True story, they thought he was a scammer or was getting scammed while he was only trying to buy them for a quarterly all hands meeting where awards were to be given out. He later got it straightened out by telling them (?) he was legit. As for your sap computer service customer...Darwin award.

EXACTLY. Scam Telemarketers scam billions of dollars a year, lots of it from elderly people. I get the, "You gave qualified for a lower rate on your credit card" and "The IRS is going to arrest you if you don't pay" calls all the time. The FBI can scrape dirt from a car's tire and tell you within a few miles where that dirt came from. Do they seriously think we believe them when they say they cannot trace these scammers. I don't care how sophisticated the scammers are, the feds could find them if they wanted to.

I told my scammer I cashed the check at a local country store and was keeping all the money until he picked the item up.

It must work enough or they wouldn't keep doing it.

I always wonder who is so stupid to do this?

I guess a fair percentage.
