I never thought I'd be posting in the racing column, but I took the old girl out to the local track last night to see what it would do. This was to set the "before" baseline, I will do it again when I get done with the winter rebuild.

This is my 66 Valiant in all-original condition. It has a completely untouched drivetrain with the exception of a new radiator and new 15" wheels/tires (which surely contributed to it being a D-O-G). 127K on the clock, 53 years old, and it still runs like a champ. It's a slant with three-on-the-tree and 3.23 open gears.

First run was a whopping 21.0 @ 56 MPH. I didn't realize where the finish line was......I thought I was there and backed out of it, only to find the 1/4 mile camera a few hundred yards later. :realcrazy:

Next few runs were better, averaging low-to-mid 20's at about 65 MPH. The tranny is tired for sure, and shifts were sloooooooooooooow. My buddy who was playing camera man could tell from the grandstands there was a lot of wasted time between shifts, but the gear box was unhappy and grinding a bit when I tried to shift quickly. Coming off the line took a while with the bigger tires, but I got the reaction time down to about .500 and didn't red light. :D

A few runs later, and I'd figured out a few things. Note To Self: You will get better results off the line if you take your foot off the brake and put it on the gas, where it is ready to do its thing when you get the green light. Oh, and there's a point at which the gear you're in isn't going any faster, you might as well shift to the next one. And lastly, the final three runs I double-clutched the shifts which made it LOTS faster between gears, and no grinding. Best run of the night was a 19.8 @ 68 MPH.

All in all, it was a fun experience, and I'll do it again, even after getting whacked bad by everyone I lined up against. Nothing like seeing the other lane crossing the finish line before you can get to the half-way point to keep a guy humble.

The Mighty Beast, ready for its first run.
Starter: Sir, please roll up your window.
Me: Doh. Sorry... :(

Proof of the evening! :)

Good deal glad you had fun thats the most important part and you didn't break anything as a bonus, always good, lol. Now you will know what she could do and what improvements you make.

Slow but sho. Congrats man! That's a LOT of fun right there!

Noth'n like racing a 3 on the tree.... especially when they are workin' right!

That's not bad! I ran 10.64 on the eighth at 68mph don't know what the 1/4 time would be a with super six clifford 264 camshaft 4 speed 3.55 gears,8:1 I wanna see what I run now after I installed the duel manifolds, 9:1 ported bigger valve head and four barrel Avs!

I say fix the shifting linkage, set the lash, bump the timing up 2* at the distributor, and give it one more go-around before yank'n. I see 17's at 74 mph....

Start back about 50 feet farther and get a run at the starting line you might get in the 15s, reaction times will suck but you can't have everything.:)

I say search around on your garage floor and see if you don't have something with bigger displacement...

If the OP had an auto trans, he'd beat you in the bracket each and every time. lol

I had a 63 Dart with a 3 on the tree. We called it the blue streak. A dense blue smoke followed it down the road.
OP, very sweet pass for a 3 on the tree slant. love it !

Careful what you wish for he's there at my home track. There may be a day when we're facing each other on bracket day...
At least I know he'll show up and has the time slip to prove it...

I take it as you haven't the occasion to run down a 20 sec car. lol usually end up breaking out if you catch them. lol

and you didn't break anything
Correct, sir! I am well aware I pushed this thing pretty hard considering it's still in factory original condition.

What are your plans for the car?
Oh my. Lots. It's a for-real factory original survivor. Paint, interior, exterior, everything except the tires/wheels and radio (some moron PO cut the dash for a DIN radio........grrrrrr) is as it was when it left the factory in 1966. Nothing was rebuilt when I bought it. I fixed all the leaks, which was everything that contained a liquid. Replaced the radiator and fixed the brakes so they would actually stop the car. I'm going to rebuild everything you can't see from the outside. Engine, tranny (swapping to a A-833OD), rear end (8-3/4, 3.55 SG, 10' drums), exhaust, complete front end and rear end rebuild, new steering box, new KH front discs, sway bar, headlights, wiring upgrades, rear springs, shocks all around, recored original radiator, custom curved super-six distributor, custom cam, OFFY 4-BBL intake with Edelbrock AVS 500, Dutra Duals, and I'm sure lots of other things I'm forgetting. My goal is to have a spunky and fun driver. I have no illusions of scaring others on the street. But it should run strong, be fun on the street, handle well, and get killer mileage on the road - and I intend to drive this thing. From the outside, it will still look like Gramma's Grocery Getter, but when you stand on it, the upgrades should be noticeable. Unless you know it never came with wider tires or a four-on-the floor, you will never know it's been worked on.

That's so you don't get sucked out the window at the top end.
Yeah, I thought about that. A closed window also means no air turbulence to contribute to a slow run time. The Beast slid through the air with ease......

My 1/8 times were between 12 and 14. Hardly anything to be proud of.

If this wasn't the Great Northwest, where it rains from now 'till July, I'd give that a whirl. As is, I'm going to pull this in for the rebuild. No more runs till next summer.

Yeah Buddy! I figure a running start will help a lot. However, it was apparent the entire package was running out of steam all too soon.

I say search around on your garage floor and see if you don't have something with bigger displacement...
That's because jpar knows I have a good running 383 sitting in the shop, waiting for a 69 Dart to go into. The Valiant will remain a slant. The Dart, however, will be spunked up a lot more. If I can ever find a good one. I feel like the Beatles tune. "I got no car and it's breakin' my heart, but I got a drive-train, and that's a start!

Congrats!!!! Leave when the last yellow comes on. That should help the .500 light. The green light is just for the spectators.
