Let me upload a couple photos of the head gasket on a 920 head.

Thank you! I would assume most of the fire ring thickness would be compressed down to maybe .023-.024" when installed.

Agree. It's pretty busy there. 3 ribs and 2 are very close. Hard to compress but designed that way I am sure. 3 sealing beads so to speak.

I can't imagine it not compressing (like little localized springs). How much it compresses... that just a guess on my part.

IIRC some of the red head gaskets sold are .020, thats pretty close if not what the steel shim gaskets were compressed. I took a barn find 64 apart recently and I thought it would be shim but it was a standard MLS replacement gasket. could try .020 dead soft copper.

I sent an inquiry to a gasket maker "Olsons Gaskets" about an embossed metal head gasket OEM style. How many would be interested in a group buy? These would be a round 3.815 bore or possible a copy of Toolmanmikes example if they have the tooling to stamp an irregular bore. Im trying to get a quote on 20 sets.

Depending on price I would buy a few sets to have and sell. The pressing and trimming dies would cost a fortune. I think a round bore would be just fine.

they said no dice on embossed. Inquired about MLS> we could always roll our own if someone had a fly cutter on a mill to cut the bore holes accurately or a punch die. check out the graphite coated steel .020-.025 thick, right were the shim gasket was.
Cylinder Head Gasket Materials & Sheets

they refered me to EGGE but they show the 273 head gasket as a 360? Also their 273 2bbl pistons L2221 are $30 more than their L2222 4bbl pistons...WTH?

Let me know what you find out.

Uuuuuhh.... specs say .2 to .25 mm, not inches. And that is the metal core. The actual product thickness min listed is 1 mm..... about .0395".

This stuff looks like what you have been able to buy here for decades.

oof, my bad. So...could this stuff work with no fire ring? Lot of work to get a gasket with close to the right bore.

Hmmm, I really don't know. But it sure seems iffy to run with no fire ring. I can't recall ever seeing a head gashet without one if the surfaces were composition.

I had a 60 over nitroused 340 that had O-rings installed in the block. I sold it before I ran it as it was...60 over. Isky sells (some say they will rent it out) the cutter, and the copper or stainless wire just taps in with a mallet. ~300 bucks plus the labor... if money is no object.

Still look good to me , Clean them and spray with copper coat, probably two coats and put them back on:drama:

I've often wondered if that'd work. I feel sure it's been done.
