I bought a gas cap for my Dads 70 swinger, but when i put it on, it don't sit parallel. It fits but it won't turn anymore. Not a huge deal but still affects my OCD lol.
Here is how it sits.

Here is how i want it to sit. Maybe it is the filler neck?

May be the last guy sold it for the same reason. Different application? It's the cap and not your fill tube. The cap changed not the fill tube.

Can you post a photo of the back side Zach?

I vaguely recall the same issue on my 74, only it was 90 off. I think I re-clocked the back side, or drilled my own holes. that an option maybe?

There are three different caps
Single bayonet - deep
Single bayonet - shallow
Double bayonet

This was from 2005 when I had a 67 Valiant

This is from my 67 dart. My gas cap looks like the one you posted.

Could the cap or filler neck just be clocked wrong from the factory?
Did the car ever have a cap on it? It was apparently correct at one time. I have never heard of a car leaving the factory with a cap that sits crooked and it would be harder to believe that the filler neck was clocked incorrectly. Has something on the car been changed during body work or a rebuild. I think there is more to this story. If I get a chance, I will take a picture of my 70 Swinger. It's all original and should be correct.

It had a mid 70s cap on it. With the extra prongs. Original cap is long gone. But that cap would sit parallel at least. Whether somethimg got changed, im not 100% sure. Car was restored in the early 90s with some part s from other darts.

Here's what I have. A 4 screw neck on my 70 and a 3 screw on my 66. Both caps are clocked the same but there is a dept difference of the tabs.

Thanks for You're help toolman, but i found the problem. Turns out the fill tube was not protruding out far enough from the quarter panel. Aftermarket quarters, had to do a little massaging, but i got it.

You can see where it was scrapeing along the sides and was not allowing it to fully turn to lock.
