Steering shaft

72 Dart, does the manual steering column have a collapsible center shaft?Putting my car together, was taken apart when I bought it, and the steering column is sticking up too far by 2”. It’s like when it was removed, they pulled up on the steering wheel trying to disengage the coupler from the gearbox, and lengthened the shaft.
Anyone heard of this?
