I just received this 1966 Barracuda dash to install in my 1966 Dart and I only have guesses as to what it is. My guess is it’s for hazard lights. It was a recall in 1966, but I’ve never seen the recall installed. And thoughts or ideas!?! How should it be properly installed, less zip tie.

That is a sending unit for a factory tach. It would have been mounted on the left side kick panel.

Thanks for the information, now I just need to see how it was all wired up. That wiring wasn’t in the factory 1966 dart service manual.

Look up 66’ Plymouth barracuda.
Very simple hook up. As long as you have the tach and it’s working.
Joe

Another side note:
That "converter box" (not sure of technical term) does not play well with electronics including the
Electronic ignition systems found in new MoPars (1972 and up). It was used with points.
I have a tach, sender and wiring for sale if your interested from a 66' formula S dash.
It is not listed on here but available.

Replace the factory POS tach and sardine can sending unit with newer accurate unit. You could put a factory vacuum gauge in its place, a useful instrument for tuning and operational info.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ended up taking all of the guts out of a 6000 rpm auto meter tach and mounting it to the factory faceplate. I think this gives me the accurate reading and no fuss of a digital tach and the factory look. The only notable difference is the two black screws

I sold my '65 tach and pancake for $400 (half the buying price of the car!) and uses a Sun Super Tach 2 in the same housing. I could wipe out the SUN writing on it but the sweep would still look different but it works with modern distributor and Mallory box and its as accurate as a modern tach. That 'ol SW was a dog, seemed like it was only for decoration as it was very slow. Could bounce the needle off the 6000 peg by just revving it.

That can is also correct for early B body cars with the factory console mounted tach. That would expand your buyer base if you were selling.

Screw the two black screws. lol That looks great. Nice work! As others have hinted, don't throw out the factory tachometer control box. Not only worth something to you, but it could help someone else with an original car.
