What am I looking at?

-
'Dude! Stick Demon badges on it and it's worth a mint!' is what you're looking at. As was noted above, this is a nice car for what it is, a nice little slant six Dart. Someone's trying to make this car worth much more than it is with goofy tricks. Make sure you check underneath real well.. get it up on a hoist with a good mechanic looking at it if you can... poke the frame rails with a finger.
I looked at a '75 Dart 4 dr. last summer. 55,000 miles, body looked nice. I crawled underneath, and the was no frame rail from the torsion support to the firewall.. none. The guy told me he just had it on the interstate doing 80.. I told him I wouldn't drive that around the block, and showed him why.. he wasn't happy with me. If it's solid, I wouldn't give more than 7k. If it's not, walk away.

Why does someone do the "cosmetics" and leave a shitty looking engine bay like that? A vin and fendertag lays the bs to rest.
Lots of potential coverups, take a knowledgable mopar person to check cars out with you.
Run away because it's a slant 6 or because all the potential covered up issues?

And kudo's to you for doing some research!
Thanks! Man trying to get into the mopar world is tough.

Well since this deal is all but shot, I'm open to suggestions. Where is a good spot for someone to get into the mopar scene. Really just the classic car scene in general. Just looking for an A body with a manual trans that is a decent deal. Preferably something that runs and drives but still needs work.

Just be patient. There's lots of nice cars that sell through here. Pay attention to larger Mopar car shows. The car corrals are loaded with goodies.

I've never seen one, but is there any chance it's a dodge dart light? I think they came with aluminum hoods and rear deck lids, and OD 4spd.

Not sure how far this is from you:
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Hardtop
The 9k you'd save over the Dart would go a long way on this car. The only problem I have with the ad is the 'Hurst transmission'.. pretty sure Hurst never made a transmission for a Mopar (if any), others on here would know.
Looks like a nice car with no 'tricks'.

yeah , as mentioned that is a dart sport with demon badges and hood scoop added....the grill on it is 73-74 only.....the tail panel trim is 74 as the 73 had 4 individual tail light bezels and which was a one year only......75 had a different style grill.....so if it is a 75 as you stated he changed the grill to a 73-74 style.....VIN would tell us for sure.....And yes 17.5K is ridiculous for that car....it is a slant six car (which is the base engine).....to give you an idea I had a 1973 dart sport original numbers matching 340 car (which 73 was the last year of the 340) and it had the upgraded A88 interior decor package which gave you the bucket seats and console......and I just sold it about a year ago for 11K and was on the market for about a year....I included some pictures of mine

yep 10K or more too much for a six cyl car with a dirty engine compartment.

Oh wow. I had no idea.

That's a beautiful looking ride. Lucky buyer.

Hey this might be right up my alley. Good looking out. Clearly I need all the help I can get lol.

and my car was a J54 hood optioned car which gave you that hood scoop....that scoop only ever came as an option on 1972 Dodge Demons and 1973 dart sports from the factory.....so if you see it on any other mopars it was added....period....never came on dusters

This is actually only like an hour and a half from me so I may go check this out. From what little I've been looking up, it seems like Hurst was in some V8 models but I can't find anything about a Hurst with a slant six.

Then again, I'm just trusting what I'm seeing on the internet. Even if it's not accurate, still looks like a fun entry point to the classic car world. Needs some TLC but still pretty drive-able it seems.

As far as I know Hurst was only involved with big dollar mopars. They also supplied manual shifters to other mopars that had manual transmissions in v8's.(4speeds) Not sure if they supplied the 3 spd shifters?

I know this is over a decade earlier, but I had a 64 valiant convertible sl/6 w/ 3spd floor shift. It had a Hurst shifter and a fiberglass tunnel bubble. At that time, I was the 3rd owner so I can't tell you where it came from. I still have that shifter and tunnel somewhere, because I parted it out after it was t-boned badly.

I saw you were in VA, so I looked on craigslist in that area. There were a few nice A-bodies on there, but were automatic cars. If you need to have a stick, that will limit what's available to you quite a bit. You can convert them over but it involves cutting up the floor and welding in a shifter hump.. not sure if you wanted to go that far.
If I was closer to that car I'd be having a hard time not getting the wife mad at me by not going deeper in debt, lol.
Before you go look at it, see if you can find a shop around there to do an inspection on it.. I think they usually charge $50-$100. Check out the frame rails and torsion cross member carefully for rust.. hate to see you get something and realize after that you have to do major surgery on it. The tops of the frame rails where the upper control arms mount (behind the shock) is a common place for rot.

Odds are there are other deception s . The transmission has no future rear end not heavy enough , if your willing to spend real money 1968-1971 would be a safer investment

Not sure what you mean about 'transmission has no future'.. typo? I agree on the other deceptions part though.. if a guy is gonna stick Demon badges on a car that's obviously not a Demon, what else is it hiding? It's a shame too, because it looks to be a decent 6 cyl. car under all the goofy stuff that would be worth 5-7k, and he's probably gonna wind up ripping some guy off.

Just for some closure on the thread I did end up buying it. Got it for $7500. Also came with the original bill of sale, which I laughed at because a dodge dart was traded in to help buy it. Tons of service history receipts various paperwork.

Frame appears to be ok, looks to be mostly just the rear 2 quarter panels that need to be replaced. But I'm being hopeful as I haven't pulled the carpet up yet.

After I got it home it started pouring down rain so I haven't done a real deep dive into everything. Hopefully can do that this weekend.

The question I have now and can't seem to figure out is, do I need a lead additive for fuel?
