Ok I rechecked the wiring and I think the positive was grounding on gauge case. Took it apart and put it back together again, more carefully this time! Everything looks right and the gauge doesn't peg anymore. I'll try check it with some heat later. Gotta babysit some grandkids now. Thanks much for all the help guys. Much appreciated.
