I posted this on the E body forum with little response, so I am going to throw it out here. I'm building a 1970 tribute/ resto-mod Challenger. It is loosely patterned after an A66 package. I would like the unsilenced dual snorkel. The problem with those is finding one at a price that is not insane. I have thought about, and have found a regular dual that someone has removed most of the rounded snorkels off of. I would just need to finish it up. It would not look exactly correct, but still have the flavor. My other thought is to get a regular squared dual and run it as is. Just put the correct wrinkle paint and pie tin on, and call it a day. Third idea is to get a original lid, and aftermarket base. I'd paint the lid/base in black wrinkle and put a pie tin on the top. Any other thoughts, or ideas are welcome.

Wrinkle black dual snorkel was O.E. on that car, I have a 71 dual snorkel air cleaner that is mint.

I thought that was only on the big block cars, the A66 is the 340, and every one I have seen had the air cleaner with the snorkels removed. That said, I am going to run a 408 stroker, so a big block displacement kind of .

I picked up a duel snorkel 72 air cleaner with the intentions of removing the snorkels and trying to replicate the recessed oval holes, but fear of ruining a real nice dual snorkel I ended up running a 69 440 air grabber on my car.

I have a bunch of 72 - 73 340 air cleaners that I'm going to convert to 70 - 71 340 air cleaners. I'm going to call them air cloners, and mark them where crooks can't pass them off as originals. I know that doesn't help you a bit right now....lol. Good luck in your search.

I certainly would not start with a nice unit if I was going to attempt it for the same reason. Someone might need a nice one, so why ruin it. The one I found has already had the snorkels cut off, but after looking at it, I don't think that I could do a good enough job to be happy with the finished product. So, now I am considering my last two options, as well as adding something like yours to the list.

I wanted to put a 72 340 trap door on a dual snorkel, I have both and the trap door is missing the snorkel already so, Hmm

I've been researching a way to punch the flanged oval holes, that would be the toughest thing to get right if converting one.

I was going to cut out the back section out of the trap door, complete assembly and weld it into the dual snorkel.

That should work well, I had to cut the oval air cleaner I used on my car down to the 440 height it was for a 383 and 1 inch taller than the 440, I removed 1 inch from the carburetor flange and welded it back together, I used a mig but I bet a tig would be easier they are so thin.

Sounds like the one you have would be perfect to do the conversion on.

A mig is all you need, melt it in good and grind it down you would never know.

Back in 1974 during the big tornado outbreak there was a 71 340 duster that got blew into the woods on a farm near me. The owner sold the motor and trans out of it and later gave me what was left of it, I got the air cleaner and ralley dash out of it. I let a friend talk me out of the air cleaner a few years ago, I sure wish I'd kept it at the time I only had B bodies and didn't need it, but ya'll know how things go. :(

I like my original 340 Air Cleaner but decided to change it up a little for easier breathing.

I've always liked the big Oval Mopar Cleaners. Might shoot the base and lid wrinkle black and just keep the air cleaner care decal. Like them in Chrome too.

Well, at least it is a good looking one for that price, I found this on one on eBay, and it isn't pretty.

I'll add that these things have gone nuts pricewise in the last year. I use to see them in the $350-450 range . Fairly recently I saw one go for around $750. Now, everyone is asking that price for every POS air cleaner just because they saw one sell for that price. Sort of like the Barrett-Jackson effect I guess. Since one sold for that much, mine must be worth that too.

Horrible....

Just an update here, I went ahead and broke down and bought an original air cleaner from a member here. I could not do justice to the rest of the car by trying to rig something up. The price was not cheap, but better then a lot of eBay deals, and I will have some satisfaction on putting the finish on it myself. I guess it's sort of a Valentines day gift for my car.:D Thanks for all the replies!!
