Flywheel removal question?

904 trans, 1967 slant six,......so how would you get this flywheel off?

If you mean the ring gear...you don't.

Take the converter to a local converter shop (almost every big city has at least one) and they will cut that one off and weld a new one on.
 
What you are looking at is the torque converter. It should just slide forward off the input shaft of the auto trans.

If you can weld, you can do it yourself. Just remove the converter, cut the welds, remove the ring gear, clean the ring gear seat area and weld a new one on. Or, you can probably buy a reman stock converter for around 100 bucks with a new gear already on it.

Yeah it does not want to come out. The trans is going to the trans shop for a rebuild. I assume they can replace the ring gear?
 

The trans shop will probably recommend a new converter. I would actually endorse that.

Thanks AL, the converter is fine I think, the teeth in the ring gear are sheared in a couple spots. Your converter have a good ring gear?
 
The FSM manual ('repair, dont replace' must be their montra) shows you how to cut the welds with a cold chisel and them hammer the ring off. Debur the edges and throw the new ring in a pan of hot water (?) or some heat source and then quickly get it centered onto the convertor before it shrink locks on. then tack weld it carefully so it doesnt warp. up through 67 convertors are small snout, remember that.

You meant the damaged ring gear ON the torque converter.

On the farm, you would hit those teeth with a stick welder and file back to shape. I think a ring gear is about as expensive as a rebuilt convertor...

Those tack welds are just scratching the stick to the joint and letting it arc flow about 1/2 second. Hard part with a stick welder is the stick 'sticking' and just turning to a red hot smoking wire, usually too low amperage. Flux MIG welder is real easy, just hover over it about 3mm and hit the trigger.
