What you are looking at is the torque converter. It should just slide forward off the input shaft.
Yeah it does not want to come out. The trans is going to the trans shop for a rebuild. I assume they can replace the ring gear?

I really need to learn how to weld.On the farm, you would hit those teeth with a stick welder and file back to shape. I think a ring gear is about as expensive as a rebuilt convertor...
