Carter AVS questions

Sorry about the hijack ,just curious, is your car an automatic and is that the original carb? My 69 340 has the original carb A9 4611SA and is a 4 speed. I had a discussion with someone who has a 4611S and he said that was the 4 speed carb. Not sure what the A stands for.

I understand the A suffix at the end of the model number means it has been updated somewhat from the 4611. The next update would be 4611B.

Found this document about rebuilding the AVS and my AVS didn't have the little discharge check needle shown in the image attached when I rebuilt it. Is this something I need or what?

You can also use a ball. You should have one of those in the kit. We used to use the ball to get a quicker shot. Is that what you are looking for?

You mean this?

None really, less weight to lift, quicker shot. Probably not noticeable. I never use the square weight. If you have already assembled your carb with the weight just leave it in.

Actually I haven't reassembled. Working on bookshelves for my Grandson.
The package of weights etc. came with three different balls. One steel, one aluminum, and one what looks like plastic. I assume the lighter ones are supposed to give a quicker shot.

I'll probably get to reassembly today some time.

Thanks for you help.

Only use the steel ball. I might be old fashioned, but I would not trust the aluminum or plastic long term. You are welcome.

Got the steel ball in and adjusted the secondary spring. Got a question on vacuum. What should vacuum read that goes to the distributor?

Depends what cam you have in the engine...if it's stock, vacuum should be 14-18in manifold vacuum. Dist should be hooked to ported...that is; no vacuum at idle, and progressive as you open the throttle.

Thank you. I will check that out after the honey-dos today. :)
