Recently a great friend gave me a 489 3.23 Sure grip center section he removed from his Cuda after going with an overdrive trans and 3.91's. I have been confined to driving back roads with no highway driving with my factory 3.91's. The rear has the large yoke so I could use it and change the rear universal but I'm thinking about just changing the yoke in the 489 so I can swap it on the fly whenever I want. Most likely I'll bring it to a shop and let them do the work. I have 0 experience or confidence in doing it myself.

The 489 case uses a crush sleeve to set pinion bearing preload and if you change the yoke you will probably disturb the preload and cause a problem. IMO your best bet is to use a conversion U-joint

If you don't want to change the yoke, have a 2nd drive shaft made and a front slip yoke. Probably about the same price as buying a yoke and having a shop install it

I was off from work today and decided to take the center section to a shop for the yoke swap. I looked at the rear and measured the yoke with 2 U joints I have to go into my driveshaft. They fit like a glove in the yoke currently in the rear. I went online and got measurements and it is the small yoke after all. So that rear didn't originally come in my friends Cuda, it would've had a large yoke in a 70 Cuda I think. So I need to clean up the rear center section and give it a nice coat of paint. What color/paint should the center section be?

I bought an e body clutch type full rear axel assy and and it had small u joint.

Typically the center was natural.

That's a damn good idea.
