Probably a rookie question here but I need some answers. Short and sweet this is my 1st rebuild. Cracked a block on the boat last year, so I need to know if the cylinders are at 3.930 (standard is 3.910) if i can hone and get a ring set for this. I got one guy saying it needs to be sleeved and bored and i got another saying to just get rings and or pistons for that dia. I'd really like to just hone it and put some rings on the pistons that came out of it and be done but I also want the engine to run. Any input is appreciated. From what I've read I think I can just hone it but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site. You'll not fix a "Crack" by honing. Boring and honing cleans up cylinder walls that may be scored or rusty, but cracks are a different animal. Cheapest route is get another 318 block. easy to find and cheap.

Welcome aboard

If I read your question right, your trying to use the cracked block? And or one with a cracked cylinder. Which are two different things.

Did both guys look at the block/cylinder issue with there own eyes?

If ether problem is the case, then boring or just honing the cylinder is a waste of time and money. You can save time by taking a $1,000 bucks and throw it out the window during a crowded city street at lunch time.

I got 2 used blocks..one from 68 and one from 88 If memory serves me right. Both replacement blocks came w pistons and a few other parts but I have a whole engine of parts on the boat. Just wanna swap the blocks. I'm at the rebuild stage and I'm only trying to put it back together once if I can help it..

.020 was a standard Mopar over bore. You can just get rings and hone if there is no ridge at the top. There is a lot to boring and honing blocks to get the most out of an engine. But we used to just ball hone, basically deglaze and clean up what is there, and rering back in the day and they ran good. You can do better, but that is the short answer.

If there is a ridge. Get a ridge reamer and take it off but do not cut into the bore where the top ring travels to. Only take the ridge down to just a tad smaller then the bore. You only want to eliminate the sharp edge so you don't brake the top ring land on the piston during break in. Ball hone to put 45 degree scratches in the bores . get file fit rings and file the rings to size. Good enough for a boat. If you are close to PA. you could do it here yourself. Get file fit cast rings for the bore you have they will last several years. There is holder to file the rings square . Go to you tube and check it out.

Yea I guess I left some stuff out on the original post..whoops. does anybody have any suggestions for buying a rebuild kit? Preferences or info that may be useful in selecting a kit?

What rotation is the motor that is in the boat now?

So I just was messing around the other night..stuck the bore gauge in and mic'ed it..3.950...is this still ring-able? To reply to the above comments..I am taking everything out of the block, scribing locations and bearing positions and such, so thanks for the tip but I already knew that one and it is the counter clockwise rotation. I'm going to take the boats engine.. take it apart the same way marking Every thing and hopefully throw all the peaces, cam, bearing, pistons, everything from that one into the one I'm working on now in the correct positions..I think lol

+.02 is too much to rering. Are you sure your measurements correct?
No not really man.. I swore I calipered it and it read something different..but I will look into it in the next few days and get back to you. My truck got stolen and I gotta deal with that before I can play with this more. Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply and help.
