Picked up a slant for the first time

Hey Everyone,

New to the board and to the slant 6 game!

I just picked up a 68 Valiant 4-door with the 170ci slant. The car is super clean. Just turned 47,000 miles.

looking to just cruise it and race it on the occasional Wednesday nights and local molar races. I bought it from the second owner. He raced it a bit.. 14.50s in the eighth.

Any recommendations on bolt ons that would be good to gain a little more power? I have no intentions of tearing apart the motor at this time.

Sorry, but gotta do it..."Molar races"? Is that just for dentists?

I would leave it AS IS, but if you just GOTTA F with it, the Super Six setup is a good place to begin.

FABO has good info, but to get the best slant six scoop travel over to www.slantsix.org/forum
they host an East/West Coast slant six racing series, so that site will get you info from the folks that actually race them with a purpose.
 
Don't want to touch the motor? Super six spec 2.25 head pipe and some 3.55 gears. 2.76 is for highway cruising. 47K, that a real peach.
 
Gears would be the best bet. You can buy 3.55 gear ratios new from Richmond gears for the 7.25. That 170 will scream with 3.55s

Great call on changing gears. Honestly did not think of that.

That’s just the thing.. the car is so clean and so low miles I don’t want to f with it tooooo much. Manifold, electronic ignition, gears, and exhaust might be all she gets.

so is a super 6 the best “all around” intake? Looks like there are quite a few options out there... are the supers hard to find?

For your purpose, a super six is probably the best, but people now think they are made of gold. If you do find one for a reasonable price make sure you get everything, mainly the trans kickdown linkage. You could probably get a Offie manifold and a small 4 bbl (or 2bbl adapter) carb for the same or less money.
Stock exhaust manifold, but a 2 or 2 1/4 pipe, and free flowing muffler would not hurt. But before doing anything, I would check the basics. Adjust valves, then compression check, Maybe electronic ign, and adjust timing, maybe a little more advance. Of course check/change plugs, cap, rotor, wires, PCV (make sure the passage in the carb is clean), air filter. Drive it to see how it acts, stock, before doing mods.
PS: A friend here in Florida had one similar, and his estate was selling it.
 
Welcome to the forum, looks like you got a good one there.
As for the super 6 manifold, make sure you get all of the parts it came with such as carb, brackets, and air cleaner.
I also would suggest that you upgrade the exhaust to a bigger pipe from the manifold back, the original is smaller than the outlet and chokes the flow a lot.
The gears are a good idea as well.

Yea, I plan to check all of the essentials. I have driven it a bit and when I bought it the guy was racing it.

it will get a complete check over the winter.

If you or a friend has fabrication skills, a great alternative to buying an overpriced 2bbl Super Six intake manifold is modifying a cast aluminum 1 bbl manifold to fit a 2 bbl carb. The factory Super Six manifolds have the exact same runner size as the 1 bbl manifolds. The cast aluminum 1bbl manifolds save weight and can be welded on.
Also, I disagree that a full kit is the best way to go. A Locar Kick Down cable is much simpler than the factory piece, easier to adjust and eliminates the issue of working with 50 year old mechanical linkages.
Good 2bb Holley 2280 carbs are out there.
As a substitute for the factory air cleaner housing. Consider a carb hat, remote air cleaner and a cold air intake duct, or the factory air cleaner if that is what you want. Then you are only looking for the 2 bbl housing and lid, not the complete kit.
 
Welcome to the forum. By far the single best thing I ever did to any of my slant 6's was a valve adjustment. It seemed they always needed one and it seemed it always completely smooth the motor out.. and my favorite part was free...

Nice car! I like the approach your taking, modify it for fun, but simple things that can be put back to stock if needed or wanted. That looks very clean! Good to see it's going to get used, that's what they are for.
 
What are you guys adjusting valves to cold?
Ratt's it's been so long...
I generally add a couple thousands when it's cold. Someone will chime and quickly with the numbers and I'm sure the exhaust and intake will be different specs...
 
intake .010 exhaust .020 factory spec.
Those are the factory numbers hot.
I carefully did my #1 cylinder intake and exhaust hot at .010 and .020.
Then let it sit until stone cold. (Next evening after work)
Rechecked and they were .012 and .022.
Adjusted 2 through 6 cold at .012 and .022.

I would check to see that the heat riser is free and working.
Because it's new to you, I'd establish a baseline with a compression check.
Try bumping the timing to about 10* BTDC.
170 with an automatic...just don't expect too much and you'll be fine.

Pishta pipe and turbo if you want to go wild.
