Right now my 72 dart is flat black. I plan on taking it down to metal to see what is under the paint,(body filler etc) I have a small shop air compressor with no water filter. Will spray can primer work before paint? does the primer need to work with the paint?

Yes it will but it will be really expensive.

Don’t do it! Use an epoxy. The rattle can crap just sucks in moisture and causes you more grief. Spend the same $ for a cheap filter! JMO.

You can get rattle can 2 part epoxy, just pop the second piece, usually from the bottom. It must be used quickly, just stay away from the home store/auto parts primer stuff!

Very good advice ! I hope the OP takes it.

I used rattle can primer/sealer on my wheels before laying down some single stage urethane. They turned out fine. It's probably not ideal, but sometimes 'not ideal' is good enough to work just fine.

RRR is right about the expense. Spray cans would be a very expensive way to do it.
1969383S is also right. You really do want to protect bare metal with epoxy primer. Plus you cam do filler work right on top if the epoxy when it is scuffed with some 80 grit.
Here is my $0.02. Go to TP Tools at 1/2'' Coalescing Air Filter .html?b=d*8081
They sell a water separator that does a great job keeping the air dry. it takes reusable filter cartridges that look kind of like toilet paper rolls. They can be dried out and reused many times. Make sure you buy a few extra cartridges. This thing works great. I have one.

You can get disposable filters that screw on to your spray gun not expensive.
My neighbor did rattle can primer on his truck took it to the paint shop to have it painted and 2 years later his paint is falling off as well as the primer.

I agree get some sort of inexpensive water trap , also you can also get a $5 little plastic bulb type trap to use at your gun, it helps. The foundation of your job will be the quality of the metal surface and using a good epoxy primer. I agree stay away from the auto parts store crap. Only thing I have seen decent is a large can made by MarHyde and I think they called it a self etch. I have used it as a spot primer on a few small spots with OK results. The stuff is expensive like $35 for a large spray can. BUT!!! Don't try to prime your car with stuff out of a spray can!!!! Period. OK?
Like many others on here, I like Southern Polyurethanes stuff. You can get an epoxy primer that makes 2 gal with the activator. Also you an Mix a little reducer and use it as a sealer over your filler, you applied on top of the epoxy primer. So you spend maybe $250 for this.
So for that $ you have enough epoxy to primer the whole car very well top bottom inside out and seal it with great quality product.

Don't forget to tell people to use a respirator when using this kind of paint...

Good post. I have used them as well. Not a painter but understand! They are relatively cheap.

i have checked with many body shops and none of them use epoxy primer when painting a car. They say it is a good idea on frames and such. Why epoxy for the body components?

Super hard and superior binding to bare metal! You want that bottom level protection! Not a painter, like said but why just on a frame? All the metal needs love!

the 2K epoxy you have to pop the bottom on has compatibility needs: make sure whatever you want to cover with is compatible with your base primer.
