318 Poly in an Early A Body?

-
A 331,354, 392 Hemi will fit, why not a Poly? I like the idea.

I looked into putting an early 354 Chrysler Hemi into a 67 Barracuda. Talked to people that did it. Not an easy fit and definitely not worth it for me. I cant imagine what it would take to get one in an early A.

I know someone who has a 62' Lancer that is Poly- powered and a very nice car if he lets me get and show pics I will.

Poly power!

If I happen to find a early B body to buy that has a Poly, it will stay in there for sure.

There is a guy here in town with a 64 Coronet and whenever he takes it to the cruise-in there are always folks admiring the Poly engine. (including me) He's got it dressed up with nice aluminum valve covers and an aluminum two four barrel intake that was on it when he bought the car in 1979. You just don't see that many of them these days so they are cool again.

I'm considering buying a 318 poly to put in my 64 Barracuda, along with an A727 trans. I know the heads are a bit larger, but I'm hoping there's room. Any headaches or horror stories to report?

With out a doubt it would be neat.....but alot of work and way more money.

I have a low deck Dodge Hemi and an early 392 Hemi and a Poly motor myself....but I have 340 in my early A.

I have a Poly out of a '66 Belvedere in my '67 D100 shorty. RV cam,Weiand 7503 single plane /500cfm Edelbrock, dual flowmasters. Scoots pretty well with the np435 4 speed.Plenty of room in the truck engine bay. I love the boat anchor, but would not put one in an A body. I love the HP 273 in my '65 Dart GT. All the power I need.

Yes , one on right is the hydro. master. ( used in the Sweptline trucks from '61-'68. Changed to mechanical '69-'71).

My thanks to everyone for their insight and comments. After reading all the great advice, I tend to agree with the majority, that it would be more work than its worth. I do like the "coolness" of the poly motor and how it can be built to the moon, but this Cuda doesn't need 500 HP. Maybe my next Project! I have a mildly built 273 and just need to find an 18 spline 904 for it. I'll try that first. Thanks again.

I have that trans for you up in Michigan, near Ann Arbor.

It's not whether a Poly is a worthwhile engine, and it will probably fit with some hammering and modification. Just like a 727 in a early A. It will fit with some hammering and modification. A few have done it before. If the OP has to ask, he probably shouldn't attempt it. If you have to ask, it's probably above your head. It just doesn't make good sense. If you like the Poly (I think they are cool too) you would be better off finding a early 60's B body. The poly's came in those. They fit.

I have seen such done in a 68 Charger decades ago but what it took?
I figure if it did not come from factory for example, a BB in a 67 A body, or 416 hemi in same, it would take a lot of measuring and maybe cutting and fabbing for it to work as in your example, but you know that. I bet you can go to FB sites for hotrodding and find the answer.
Just because the guy, th OP has never done it and is asking questions does not men he can not figure it out and get it done. Learning new skills is half the fun!

I put a poly in my w200. I couldn’t bring myself to put the stock manifolds back on.... very restrictive looking center dump logs. I bought some flanges from ebay and built my own headers with a sbc header kit. Runs and sounds good, much more power than the leaning tower ever would have made. Used a rebuild kit from egge. I would not try to fit one in an early A. Much better options available.
