Wheeler Dealers

Desert Car Kings did an episode a while back with a 65 barracuda and actually broke the back glass. They had to buy a whole car just to get one they said it was a $1500 window!

They just said that the 65 barracuda has a "two piece drive shaft with a support bearing." What???? Oh my! he just cut out the wheel wells. I caught them saying "putting a 1965 hubcap on a 2017 wheel." Was this shot in 2017??

aw, I missed it, Ill have to get it on demand. 2 piece as in a rubber isolation driveshaft, ala Mustang? Was the 2017 wheel a 5 on 4?

They did talk about the Mustang, (doing a comparison) but they were referring to the Barracuda when they were talking about the two piece "propeller shaft."???? I don't believe they were doing a 5 on 4 wheel, (5 on 4 1/2) as they are going to build it as a drag car. They custom built the wheels to fit the 13" beanie (dog dish) hub caps. The wells were monsters. They are putting a Hemi in it. Drive shaft "catch rings" custom tunnel, roll cage, etc. I guess they will finish it on the next episodes.

That was staged. They’ve got 10 lying around and they get 200$ for them. Gullible TV watchers.

Jake

Gas monkey did the same thing.
Broke the rear glass.... made what seemed like a thousand calls for hard to find impossible to find rear glass. They find one for $1000.00 ($200 glass, $800 to ship)
And gingerly install it with lots of drama.
I think it’s all to hype up the car’s price.
All I know is they never called me for one.
Lol!

Perhaps they meant "ball and trunion" drive shaft.

If you price glass at DVAP, I bet it is a thousand.

Whole 66 down here for $1500.

I think just because the glass looks cool and expensive, people assume it is expensive.

.....and then play it up for TV.

There was one for the taking in Monterey, CA a while ago, "come up and get it", shipping is always a hasse on that big 'fragile' part but they are supposed to be pretty tough. They would have more trouble finding a good 66 taillight bezel, that's a real 1 year only part.

Heck I finally got my windshield installed on the 76 Volare RR this a.m., I had called 10-15 glass companies just N of Houston, finally found a Mexican co. with 12 of them!!!!!!! $285 and with tax and ??????, the total was $340. I just paid it and was happy. Mexican arithmetic!? Don't are I got the friggin glass!!!!!

I guess their Cuda build will be a resto mod drag car!!! At least the Brits are doing something cool and not another LandCruiser!!!!!

That dude works fast.Wish I was a quik! Looks like they have made some $$$ and bought a bunch of metal working stuff!! TV pays better than building and flipping cars!!???

Anyone catch the mechanic calling the yards for a 64-66 quarter panel not 64-65....luckily he found the correct one.

Easy to build a car quickly when you walk away and let the staff of mechanics do the job for you. Plus the camera hides like 100 man hours I’m told. Lol!

I bet there is good $$ in the TV car shows. No doubt a lot of work an aggravation for the guy doing the actual work on the cars. I like it all even the Hollywood stuff, just hate drama! It helps keep people interested and sometime we actually see someone do something that we learn from.
I have seen those Brits pay some $ for a car do their magic, list the number hrs put in to it, and sell thus car, and looks like they made $3 an hour on that one! But how many $$$$ did the TV pay them. What did I learn?? NOT to buy that model car for that price!!!??? Don't want a Saab anyway! ha

I've told the story probably four times on the Forum when I bought my wife 66 Barracuda from a Chevy flip guy. He went on about how the rear window was $2,000 which is what Desert Rats said. I said I'll give you four windows for the car LOL..
He turned it down surprisingly enough.
I have a friend 2 hours away that will pay my gas if I can come get that pile of crap window out of his yard...

When did desert car kings end? Believe they made two? seasons?
I've been to their main yard, and have sold some odd ball sheet metal to them I couldn't sell. Didn't get much, but at least covered what I paid the U pull it for it. Of course the labor and transport to DVAP wound up being free.

In case some people don’t know but a private company makes a tv show in most cases. They then pitch and sell idea with a pilot to a tv network. If the show is good and bought AND does well the network typically kicks up more money and orders x amount of more shows. The better the ratings the better the price tag. Shows like wheeler dealers does well because they donot have a lot of drama and are notoriously doing off “American style cars.” IMHO. Yes they did a few typical cars but honestly they show a wide variety of cars that even a Ford or die hard Chevy person can appreciate.

Sponsors then kick in with “donations” of equipment so their logo and brand is seen. Look at Gas Monkey. There is no way in heck they buy all of the equipment like that over one season- but the banners in the back ground to reinforce the brand name proves my point. Even Wheeler Dealers now have the best of equipment. Look at that $15k adjustable articulated arm car lift they use.

I also like how the cost of labor is not a factor in the cost of the car. They loose money on the car to make money on the sale of the show.
It’s all very cool but a gamble and they are very lucky right now. They are doing good. I wish them well. Simple show, low drama and they seems to do nice work. I also like the people. No stuck up actor wannabes.
okay- off soap box.

Some people get confused on these forums as to how to properly quote and respond!
