And you're right. When I went out back to dump the coffee grounds, he or she was still hangin out in the big walnut tree. Couldn't give a hoot about the dogs out in the yard below, or me in the alley. View attachment 1715422921

Based on that bird’s markings and behavior, it a juvenile hawk just learning to fend for itself in Winter and is hanging out where it thinks it can get easy prey. We have experienced it here and in previous houses numerous times. They eventually shun that behavior for higher reward/lower risk hunting as they mature. Being in a tree that close to the ground to hunt is risky for a raptor and they eventually learn to take a different approach. Being way up in the air gives them a much wider hunting range to select from, better opportunity to ambush prey that don’t see them coming and reduces risk for them.
