I think there is a number u can put into ur cell phone to stop nuisance calls and telemarketers. Does anyone have it? How many use it? Does it work good. I’m up to about 20 calls a day. This needs to stop!!! Kim

You're in Canada. You will have to get online and find out.

Have you guys encountered the "phishing" calls where a computer can literally dial someone from YOUR number (or at least it looks like your number on caller ID)

so you get a scammer/telemarketer call, from a familiar area code #, and you answer it, BUT.... that # is actually a local persons #.

my grandmother got a call from another church going old lady that lives up the street (according to caller id) ...so she answered. came up on ID and everything. But it was a scammer.

Yes. And here's government reporting center for those.
If they can detect a pattern from the complaints, apparently there are ways to address it. I don't know if that means legal action or the telcom get enough info to cut them off.

Looks like I saved it. Here you go.

Yes, I had my number calling me once. Then other calls from our own town. Pisses me off. Kim

They are also spoofing actual CRA (our IRS) and cop shop numbers from what I've heard on the news.

I've had the same issue. With the land line, it's only an occasional thing, and if I don't recognize who it is, I don't answer. If it's legit they will leave a message.

For the cell, I activated a setting called "do not disturb". It will only ring for people in my contact list. All others go to voicemail and the scammers just hang up. It's irritating as hell, I was getting 30-40 calls a day before I change the settings.

Go to nomorobo.com and sign up your landline for free (if you have call forwarding). They charge for this service on cell phones.

did you call it "2"?

Well, when they start talking, ask them to wait while you turn on the recording for the FCC (or IC for Canada). Sometimes they'll freak out and hang up!

There is a box you can get that plugs between jack and phone. It sees caller ID and if its not one you have programmed in, it dumps it, it even intercepts the first ring so the phone never 'rings' while its doing its job, its about $100 here. some how it even sees through spoofed numbers according to the customer that had it. Hes an IT security guy so I believe him.

heres one but dont know if it silences first ring...

Same here. I am usually very rude. The Do Not Call list doesn't seem to slow down the duct cleaning arseholes. I am rude to them, too.
There are only a certain few that I'll let clean my ducts and tell them that :D

I get 3 to 5 a day, Sundays included and beginning at 6AM even.
I let the answering machine take all calls.
The only reason I even have a land line is Cuz the internet comes in on it.
I keep my land line for a number to give ALL businesses including doctors etc and when dealing with anything on the internet. At a minimum, I get 5 junk calls a day on it while my cell phone stays nearly free of them. Yeah, it's costing me but imo, it's worth it. A couple of years ago a girl friend listed my cell number when she entered my name to win a freakin Ford pickup. Told her in no certain words that she's not to ever give out my cell # for ANY reason!

I dont get hardly any at all on my cell phone. I dont share that number with too many people. Friends/family/work but thats it. Our landline we get more spam/scam calls. 99.9% of all scam phone calls are generated by a computer that a human is monitoring. They now have come up with a program that uses a legit phone number as a cover, but its not really that number at all.
Kim for example you get a call on your phone. It shows "Bumper to Bumper" as the number, you answer it but its from "Revenue Canada", or "Visa". They basically have devised a program that "cloaks" their real number.
It will never end, just like scamming will never end. And they dont have to do it in person.
Keep your cell number private, NEVER put your cell number on anything.
Sign up for the Do Not Call list, what can it hurt? We did with our land line once the list was it was devised.

Believe it or not, spoofing a number for caller ID is not illegal here. Don't know how when we banned F'n plastic straws and grocery bags...
