340 Cam Choice

I know there are better cam choices today. I’m not doing this until next spring. I’m staying hydraulic Car is a driver. Want a little more than stock. Something with a little lump but don’t want to over cam it.Hoping to keep springs that came with Eddy I was looking at these two, but I don’t have the knowledge like a lot of you guys and was looking for Input and maybe someone is running close to the same set up and knows a good selection. Car will be mostly for around town but will be taking highway trips as well.

Stock Cam currently

Stock Manifolds 2 ¼ Dual Exhaust Flow masters but changing to Walker Quiet-Flow 3 Mufflers
Dodge Electronic Dist./Orange Box

Love that car! Very nice.

I'd get on the phone and order something other than an off the shelf grind. The cost is about the same and you'll get a much better product.

Yes but I'm not knowledgeable enough to pick the right specs. That's why I look at off the shelf grinds and why I'm asking experience FABO members for the input. Thanks

Just thought someone out there was running something similar and had suggestions or opinions of cams I was looking at in original post.

What YR is saying is that the people on the phone will pick the specs from the information you provide. Much like the info you have provided on this discussion forum but from the people who are actually going to grind the cam.

True enough. Thanks

My ''custom cam'' from bullet cost me almost 600 canadian dollars,no lifters, and its a small hydraulic.as stated above, theres no magic camshaft, with what youre running you may as well use a stock 340 grind

I got a custom cam from Jim at Racer Brown. Mine is a solid cam, but as said above, it is real easy to talk to these cam companies have them make one just for you and your desires. You just have to be honest with yourself and them to be happy.

for the street as rigger says, it's pretty hard to beat the stock cam
...but you didn't want to hear that.

I run that XE-268H Cam in my 360 in my power wagon and I like it. It pulls good and has a ton of midrange and idles a little rougher than stock. Nothing crazy but runs good and I would use it again in another build. It would be even better in a car as the truck is heavy being 4 wheel drive and takes a bit to wind up. That motor/cam combination in a car would be even better, but like I said I am pleased with my setup. Mine is a 4 speed as well and I plow with it too and it behaves nicely.

You don’t have enough gear and to much fire for the smaller of the two choice cams. (The Comp) And you would need at least a 2500 stall with the small cam.

Id to a step smaller on the Comp cam.

You already got a good one 268/280 I would just upgrade to 3.55 though , here's my 360 with that same camshaft you selected before it blew up.

Like the others have stated, you've hit a slippery slope where other parts will need to change to make the package work. Call a custom cam grinder. Is the engine built all ready or what you have list is all ready in the car and running?

Jim at Racer Brown has done 2 for me - one for my 273/235 and the other for a 70 340. He does ask a lot of questions about the motor, trans, rear end gears and body so be prepared.

Quick question: The OP has a question mark by his compression ratio. Is the cranking pressure enough info for a cam grinder?

Then call Jim at Racer Brown, tell him what you have and what you want and let him chose your lobes for you.

I find it difficult to swallow that Comp (or anyone else making shelf cams) made a cam just for what you have.

Do they have something close? Probably. Is it worth the 20 bucks you might save?

Make the call to Jim. Call him after 2 PM EST and he can help you with the best cam for you.

Then you got screwed. I don't care if you live in Afghanistan you over paid. $225.00 USD is the most expensive custom HFT cam I've seen.

I have hung up the phone and called someone else. Bullet I'd far from my favorite cam grinder so if they pulled that price on me, I'd have told them there is a dark, smelly hole where they can put that turd cam.

160 psi w/ 10.5:1 SCR and stock cam?

Have measure the actual SCR??? Any cam company will want to know the actual compression ratio. Otherwise, they're just pissin in the wind.

both your suggested cams peak 5800 and 6000. Are you going to shift
at 6800 - 7000 on the street to take advantage of those peaks street light to street light??

I had the 2nd cam but the mopar 280/474 in my 360. I think it made nice power. However, @ 1st had a generic so called high stall 10" converter and performance was not very impressive. When I swapped in a 9.5" FTI 3400- 3600 stall converter car woke up!:steering:

dont forget i live in canada, we pay 25 cents on every dollar, inflated shipping, taxes and duty.to top it all off they initially sent a cam for a 440, not the 360 that we had gone over all the specs of my combo. car runs good but to be honest i may as well have just kept my 284/484 purpleshaft that was in there for all the difference it made. i got some cool decals though!LOL

I like the Comp XE268. I have it in a mild 360, Eddy 650, HiPo 340 manifolds, 3.55 gear. Every time I take that car out, I come back with an ear to ear grin. I would recommend it in a heart beat.

that's why it is so difficult to judge personal comments.I used the xe-268 in a warm 340.
3'23 gear and a 27" tire.Mid range was strong and the power seemed limitless but it was
soft until at least 2500 rpm and despite what comp says it needed a converter for an automatic.
I'm convinced the 256 or 262 would be a better for pure street.
