I managed to bugger the threads on the steering column when puttin a new switch in can't get the nut to start so I can draw wheel down to where it needs to be. Tried a small file down in the threads but no luck, what can I do now?

Remove the steering wheel and use a die to clean the threads and a tap for the steering nut. Or use a thread file, I have hacksawed a nut and use it as a starter die also...Sometimes the steering nuts are crowned to lock on the steering shaft threads...….so using a tap then would be mute.

There are small triangular files that you can use to clean threads. The angle on a triangular file is the same a regular threads. I would clean (file) the first few threads with the file to be able to get a thread chaser on there. A thread chaser is designed to "clean" the threads as opposed to a regular threading die that cuts threads. If you try the thread chaser before the file it might not start correctly and you'll make things worse.
