What is in my basement?

-
coworker told me to fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of water and put it in the center of the basement. give it a week and i should see a floater. Hopefully its a bat and not the kids practicing for ice fishing.

I’m pretty sure that sound is from a baby raccoon. That is exactly the rhythmic locator call they make when the mother is away from the den. I had a friend who had a den of them up in his unused fireplace years ago and that was the same sound that echoed through his living room before they found the critters up inside. Mama was coming and going up through the chimney, across the roof and down a tree next to the house.

It's a House Wren nesting. Don't block any access point beyond what's normally blocked. Couple weeks they'll be gone.

House Wren
Funny thing, but today I heard a wren trying to nest around one of our outdoor garage lights. Made the exact same sound as the OPs video. It caught my attention while I was in the garage and I went outside around the back of the house and spied it in action working the nest in around the back of the light.

I would have pulled the nest down for fear of fire, it we use low wattage bulbs in those lights that won’t be overheated by the nest...so I figured I would just let them be and stay warm for the Winter.

I like wrens, they are great bug catchers and having them around is beneficial.

That is definitely a raccoon. I have hunted and trapped hundreds of them. Use a can of tuna in the back of a live trap but make sure the trap has weight on it so they can't dump the trap over and eat it. They are super clever... When it gets cold, they den up but if it's mild out they will come out and be on the hunt for whatever they can eat.

It sounds like you have a lone tree frog. They shut up when lights are turned on also when you get close to them.

Raccoons have more of a chatter sound be sides you'd hear them missing around with stuff like knocking stuff over. You'd also see droppings.

Bats make don't chirp like that they make more of a screeching sound.

The noise was never heard again after the video was taken. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Whatever it is is gonna be SLAP FULL before it ever gets into that trap. LOL

Took the trap down a week ago. it’s back! I’ll keep you posted. Got a buddy coming over for a second pair of eyes.
