It should hemi orange along with the engine block. Getting the correct shade is difficult. Best source for the absolute correct engine paint color is Frank Baldason.

I don't know the codes, but there are two different colors. Race Hemi Orange and Street Hemi Orange. The Race orange has more yellow in it and the Street orange has more red. If that helps at all. I would get a can of the MP Race Hemi Orange, prep a small piece of metal, prime it good then paint a couple coats and take it to your local paint shop. They will shoot it with a color gun and match it.

You want race hemi orange with the yellow tint. Contact Frank Baldason to get the correct tint.

Race hemi orange as stated on the other post is correct, it is a yellow orange when compared to street hemi orange, the easy way to get it is contact Frank Baldason he has the correct PPG color code and will sell you a can of paint.

But some people in posts in Forum claim there are more than two Hemi Orange? A little more story around this would be interesting. But don´t tell me you was around first time these cars showed up :) Many or at least some racers had a new engine waiting, and pulled the original right away. Meaning new engine might would have had any Hemi Orange color?... I personally might have to use this as an excuse, if someone points out color is wrong, all though I want as much as possible to be as it was when delivered from Hurst...
I don´t doubt this Balderson guy ( excuse me languish at times) know one Hemi Orange from the other, but what did they really use at Hurst?
If there are some sort of documentation… that is what I would like to see...
Excuse me Dave for jumping in like this. But to me this is maybe the hardest nut to crack...

The engines were painted race hemi orange. Because...they were race hemis....duh..use your brain or buy the restoration book before you spout off...you know everything why even join the discussion. Good luck finding the correct hemi orange without going to someone who is highly respected like Baldason for his knowledge and accurate restorations. Do some research before you bag on someone. Paint it black with rustoleum for all I care. Typical internet know it all ..
cya I won’t reply to the expected bs you will post

The THREE Hemi orange colors I am familiar with are Race Hemi Orange, Street Hemi Orange and Hemi Orange, which is what they used to paint the CARS with, which is a third and different shade from the engine paints. Other than that, I am unfamiliar with anything else.

But that certainly means nothing, since what I know won't fill up the head of a pin.

well, we´ll see how this develops... but this was uncalled for don´t you think?

All I am asking if some one knows the the color code for Race Hemi orange so I can have some made. I know the original color (Omaha orange) code. It was from the industrial side of Dodge 58 to 67 they used for Race Hemi orange. The problem to make this color is the tints are lead and not made any more and substitute color is way lighter. That’s why I was asking if somebody had an updated color code for the race hemi orange.
I worked with a paint store and can up with a color that I am going to try tomorrow.

Perfect match

Probably uncalled for but the bottom line is there is only one correct color and it’s race hemi orange. I went through this myself and got the paint from Baldason. The motor should be done and painted soon. I think Dave did a great job painting his motor looks close to me. My apologies for being a bit acerbic.

That's one correct color for those engines painted Race Hemi Orange. LOTS were painted Street Hemi Orange.

Agreed lots painted incorrectly causing some of the confusion. I have seen and looked at many of the original cars over the years/decades. Dave’s looks good to me, interested in seeing how the paint I have looks when it’s done.

No, I'm talking about those engines that were correctly painted Street Hemi Orange. There are a lot of them.

Got it, but knowing the difference is important, hemi darts and barracudas were race cars with race hemis not street hemis yet the discussion of the correct color for these cars continues when it is obviously race hemi orange.

If you mean the early Street Hemi Orange (´66- early ´69) it makes me glad. This shade is lighter more yellowish than the late more redish Street Hemis.
They simple used the ´68 Street Hemi Orange is my take on this.

Not just the Hemis, but lots of small and big blocks too. But yes, that's the "other" color I am talking about.

Lot's of confusion on the engine paint. I agree with those saying Race Hemi Orange. My paint store went through archives for me and found documentation that Race Hemi and Omaha Orange were identical. They mixed my Omaha Orange. Right or not...it is orange and no one has questioned it.

Looks good, great info to keep in mind concerning the match with Omaha

Years ago I bought a can of "race hemi" orange from a Mopar dealership. It was special order but the can was labeled Mopar & "race Hemi" orange. Don't know how or where the parts guy got it, but it apparently is out there. As for the Ford blue Hemi---- according to the book on Sox & Martin, Jake King painted all his engines that color for some reason. Now if you don't care about period correct or rest-correct there's been some articles citing a black motor as somewhat beneficial in that it helps dissipate heat from the block. I've painted my race motors black for years & never experienced an overheating issue, so I'm guessing there's some truth to it
