Anyone ever run Speedmaster Heads on their small blocks

-
Did you do anything to them or just clean them up out of the box and slap them on?..
Please see post #39 above. Bought heads bare but CNC ported. Installed Ferra 2.055 and 1.60 ss valves with comp roller rockers, beehive springs, light weight retainers etc.

Sorry I get a little distracted by well life LOL... I got my duster (see a body with attitude General discussion) of course and my truck (see on Magnum swap) just spent five days working on that and pulled in my seed truck (see grandson of seed truck and general discussion) today and started working on that, customer called about his 65 Mustang he wants worked on Tuesday, just got done working on a 69 Ford Wagon wiring yesterday... Also yesterday my customer with the 65 GTO got back in town and wanted to discuss that as well... Sometimes it's hard to remember every project going on... But thank you for clarifying for me, I'll try not to forget LOL...

j par. You need a break. Take a long Thanksgiving weekend next week. Dan

The name Edelbrock is still strong with people.
Very true. I usually lean towards big name brands. I have had good luck with that. However, I am willing to consider something else, if there is sufficient data on.

Are you Gathering info on them?...
I wish there was some data somewhere. A good set of heads for half of Eddy cost would be great.

this is why I started the thread on the Race part of the Forum Speedmaster Pro Comp heads.. I wanted to gather more information as I was scouring the internet for any information and a lot of it was the Chevy people talking about them and other people just perpetuating false information and hearsay... From everybody that chimed in on the thread and that goes from engine builders to Serious drag racers there doesn't seem to be a big problem with them... Of course there isn't anyone that will tell you that it's great to bolt any head on straight out of the box and that's goes from Speedmaster, Edelbrock, to trick flow...

I have heard horror stories about sand and other junk still being in heads. What does it cost to have a decent street car type porting job done.

yeah I've heard people that have heard horror stories, but that's what I started the thread for to confirm any and there was none..
I would have to question someone's brains if they didn't at least pull the valves out and make sure everything was clean and relube ocated before they were put into service at the very least... And if by some way or Reason you couldn't see sand in the water jackets I still can't see that blowing up an engine unless they were completely clogged which again would come through and just an easy Blow by test..
the only place I called to see about any work wanted to put all brand new seats and because they'd heard their horror stories as well and wanted to do all new valves and valve job and they quoted me something like $800 LOL.. I thank them for their time and answering my questions...

That’s the “I don’t wanna do it.” price quote.

i have a couple sets of assembled and bare heads....never seen a grain of sand in the heads.....they dont use sand boxes to cast their heads to begin with....
I paid 250 bucks for springs and valve....retainers and locks.....machine shop charged me 300 bucks to do the competition valve job and assembled the heads which includes flowing one port....

this is a budget set up on a budget short block......car needs more work and track time

As I have set before I got a set that is being professionally ported by hand.....should be done before the end of the year......

I have 2 SB heads and 6 BB heads. They are clean as a whistle. I’ll add that they look awesome for lower priced parts. Just as good as any Ebrock. Kim

Local shop Brazier Race sells the pro maxx heads, I have looked at lots of them when I stop in and they all look good out of the box. I do believe they check every set they sell as part of the purchase price.

I have gotten a few of those from contractors. Several years ago, I considered adding a third garage to my house. I have a setup that would have allowed it to be done and look completely original. I called about 10 contractors. Only 3 returned my call, and only one showed up to give me a bid. The bid was outrageous. He obviously did not care if he got the job.

I have J heads with 2.02 intakes on my moderately modified 340. Would you port those or buy aluminum and port them?

Let me put it this way. I ran 11.82 with J heads on my 340 back in the late 1970’s so they can work. Would I use them today with all the aluminum head chooses available, NO I wouldn’t. I sold all my old heads off to a friend for 50.00 so I didn’t get any crazy ideas.

I thought I was the master of derailing threads.. are you trying to take my title or something...

I'm not thoroughly convinced I'm going to see a very noticeable performance difference from my mildly ported 596 heads to the speedmasters that are imported... We shall see...

Sometimes you gotta cut the crazy off at the pass!!!

Otherwise you convince yourself to stand at the bench and grind on junky cast iron for hours and hours and hours!!

BTDT!

If it was “I” doing any head work and not a machinist charging me, it would just be a bowl porting, a minor pushrod pinch touch up & a port match since I’m doing the work and I have the tools.

The aluminum head benefit is really, well, stupid to ignore?

I can still make a good case on using what you got and save a ton of money but really only if your (and you don’t mind) doing the work. Then there is the amount of head flow to start with as what you may or can end up with. Again, if you don’t mind doing the work,.... the iron head will probably fall short of what you can get cheap these days.

IF! Your head is in good shape and doesn’t need any machining, then is just labor and perhaps some bits to grind with. You can get some pretty good air flow with an OE head. You can go quick. It is a lot of work.
