71 Duster 360 (new project)

-
I keep killing the rear clutch pac........took apart the trans that was in it before it killed this one.....disc and steels burned up....i could smell the fluid...

Everything else looks good in it....trying another cluch pac with new lip seals as the old one the large lip seal looked terrible....

going to make a couple of phone calls in morning to see if i can find anything else......

Trying to get Dart ready for bracket finals weekend so i only got two days to get trans out and back in....

well....will do final assembly on a 904 for tomorrow...with Teflon seals...lol.....with Vaseline.....got all the sub-assemblies done...air test everything twice...hope to get alot of this done this weekend....Duster might be at the street car nationals with a substitute driver.

I got some thick bearing grease if you run out of Vaseline.:poke:...

We’ll be there thurs, but will most likely not run till Friday.

while assembling this 904.....i did not like the looks of the drum bushing so I want to RnR it...i have the bushing....but I can not find the correct bushing driver...I used it two weeks ago....so I am on hold until i can find it...lol

I can’t stand when that happens. I spent 6 hours looking for 1 dang tool, used it, went to go look for another.... round it late the next day... ugh!!!!

I started to call it “Project Forever” I was so mad.

Found the bushing driver...was not lost....never look for tools or parts in the dark....lol

Anyway...had a problem with the pump causing a bind in the trans....set clutch packs in....turns ok...seat pump....binds....after several try..i got another pump and bingo goes right in.....so what is wrong with the original pump.....i loose up all the bolts on it...then I use the pump alignment tool i have...tighten up the bolts....bingo it goes right it.....
Going to pull it one more time in the morning to double check the Teflon sealing rings....again..
Then i begin removing the 904 out of the duster....was hoping to be further along but as said....it happens...

Just think how bored you be if you didn't have to repair something on at least one car. It's a weekly labor of love.

oh well...one of the teflon rings on the strator was pitched......glad i checked..........it is all together now...all together now...keep signing...all together now..
Began removing engine/trans....might finish tomorrow.....might go to the air show at nellis afb......after all they are flying over my garage...

my grandson and i got the motor/trans out this afternoon......might try and go to races with other car....but work is not cooperating....

Got home early due to rain and office luncheon.....then the hearth burn started..but after an hour nap....lol got the trans swapped out....it went easy....then dropped the motor/trans in car....just sitting there...no motor mount on passenger side....
i was using solid on driver side and rubber on driver side.....rubber mount came off in two pieces...ordered new solid mounts off amazon...cheaper then summit....be here tomorrow...

everything should be done this weekend...

everything is done except putting water in it and trans fluid,,,,,,order the type f from walmart today.....here tomorrow.

You're running type F instead of all the highfalutin stuff and such or Royal Purple and all that other synthetic fluids?

Duster waiting for me to get off my lazy butt and dump about 10 qts of atf into trans and add water.....Weather has been cooler for us....I should get off work early tomorrow....and get it running along with testing the trans out........

Do you do anything to tag the transmission and water to make sure you don't forget because of the multiple vehicles or are you just relying on memory? if I had that many cars and did the latter of the two I would definitely be in trouble...

I have a field book in each car that I record changes.....oil changes....valve lash adjustments....transmission overhauls..jets...etc...

I usually write on the trans with marking pen...date of rebuild and if it has a 2.74 1st gear.

I also have a field book that i keep records for oil changes and other things for the numerous girlfriends i have too...

Ok....fired right up.....had a small leak on the return line at the transmission.....quick snug of the fitting and no leakie.....
All forward gears working....hit transbrake button everything ok so far....i still need to check that it holds on the two step.....

Wind blowing in Vegas like a MF....rain storm on it way....

Were you planning on hitting some racing this weekend?

nope...on the sofa....lol...
the weather is not going to be nice out there....i rather deal with the heat then the cold wind....
got a few more things to check out on the car...

no racing until next year.....new year new problems...lol...

Decided to tear apart the 904 that came out of the Green Duster...I was pretty sure it had fried the rear clutch pac...lol

Welded was more like it....but more to it....i took the pan off yesterday and there a nut in the pan.....ok...where did that come from...so I remove the valve body...and the rooster comb and gear selector stays in the trans as i remove the valve body...the nut cam off the bottom of the gear selector...and detent ball is nowhere to be found either.....
I remove the tailshaft....and i grab the output shaft and it comes out.....all the internals are still in the trans...Lol...the snap ring that holds it all together is not there...

I get the pump out....that looks ok....i grap the input shaft and out comes the two clutch packs with the front planetaires stuck to it...finally find the snap ring...and get the pllanteraires off the rear clutch pac off .......the rear piston just slides on and off the rear drum....gee maybe that is the problem....oh well....

make up a parts list and see what i got and what i need to order to get this back together...
