I have 2 three trans out of 62 slant cars, one A body and other B body, they have the cover on the topside. They have no mount for a floor shift. I am wondering if they are worth keeping for any parts. I have a three speed side cover trans that will go in the 62 slant Lancer with floor shift. Will anything interchange? And what are the #'s for these trans?????

Believe are A-903 top load trans.
Dont know if gear parts interchange.
I know this trans was not as strong as
A-230 side load 3-spd.

Back in the day some would retro fit
A-903 to become a floor shift model...

Like this one I have out of older challenger.
Lol.

I'm almost positive nothing interchanges with the a-230, plus the a-903 has an unsynchronized first gear. The early trans also has a reputation of being fairly weak. The a-230 is fully synchro'd and is like a little brother of the a-833 four speed and was widely used in vans and trucks. It also came behind 340s and 383s as the base manual transmission. I've known of several used in asphalt and dirt oval track cars with no issues. Plus it has a mount for a floor shifter on the tail shaft. There were close ratio and wide ratio and the possibility of an extreme close ratio called the challenger gears (Maybe from the kit car oval track program?) that I have chocked up to internet myth. Here's the ratio list for the a-903 and the a-230.

Yeah nothing but maybe the ball-bearings,lol. Oh and the back bushings.
But they make great bench-grinders, polishers, and if you mount a small 3-jaw chuck on the back, well that can come in real handy.

Thanks for the info, I hate to throw anything away or haul off or just scrap. Looks like that toplaoded A 903 has a bracket to muont the floor shift, bolted to back of case.
I wonder when that A903 was used as in the 50's????

I believe the shift levers will bolt onto an A230. That way, you could upgrade and keep the three on the tree linkage. That's my plan.

My first 2 cars were 3 on the tree deals, I hated them. The RoadToad will get the A230 with a Hurst shifter. Not sure where I will be at till I get the engine/trans in and cut a hole in the floor! The 62 Toad never had a floor shift but the 60-1 did with a goofy "noodle" shifter, used with a bench seat. They dropped that in 62 cause like you would think "noodle" is not good!

I'm considering this route myself to swap from the A-903 to an A-230. If you could share what you find out I'd appreciate it.
