I am looking for opinions and experience regarding fiberglass bumpers on a bodies . I am thinking of replacing my back with a fiberglass one, I have painted mine satin black to match my Scat Pack stripe and like the look, but it's getting worn and would like to replace it. As you know these bumpers are quite heavy and removing weight is just like adding horsepower. What are your thoughts

I would put a fiberglass bumper on the front and keep the heavy stock bumper on the rear to better balance the cars’ weight.
For the glass bumper I would also go with light weight aluminum mounts.

Yes you make a good point, that's why I'm asking I don't want to go through the changes if it serves no real benefit

IMO.
if you drive the car alot in traffic situations,
I would stay with steel.
I got bumped from behind by old lady going about
10 mph. Mangled right rear tail lite housing
And I barely felt it....with fiberglass rear bumper.

Another very good point, I have managed to stay out of trouble as far as accidents go for 40 years with my car but it is a Streetcar and traffic and idiots get worse all the time:elmer:

I think I'm over the fiberglass bumper thing, thanks
Fiberglass parts is a race car go fast timing thing, you'll never really notice the difference on the street unless you go nuts and do bumpers, hood, trunk lid, doors, seats... and at that point you might as well go racing. As a daily driver there is little to no need for fiberglass.

Agree , but u can swiss cheeze the original brackets instead of buying alum. ones .

I would like to put a FG front on my drag only Duster but think that the front bumper is a strength member by tying the front frame rails together reducing twist/deflection.

So ?

8 point.

Really 6 with 2 off the main hoop.
there are only 4 bolts holding the front bumper to the frame and the ones holding the bumper to those brackets ain't doing s**t for frame strength, lots of people with Dusters run without the front bumper on

My duster being a 73 has the bigger bumpers and I actually riveted mine straight to the valles. And then just used small pieces of flat aluminum and riveted those on the bottom corners and Center for braces to keep it stiff... been that way for years now Street driving and the drag strip... Doing it that way made the bumpers look tight in instead of sticky outie.. it's just a fun car I don't daily drive it...

time for an upgrade

I found a f.g. bumper on ebay , back when I was collecting parts for my fastback. Bought it for $75 , took very little finagling to get it right .
That begnf said , it wont be worth a s--- in a wreck , GOD forbid !

It's just funny to me how some people will calculate cam specs forever but put very little thought into how to properly lighten their car. One real advantage that a body had back in the day even Against The Heavy Hitters was its weight. That being said my car spends most of its time on the street and with all the distracted drivers these days I just don't think a fiberglass bumper is worth it for me.

I went with fiberglass front bumper, aluminum brackets and fiberglass hood. Kept the rear stock.
