Whatever happened to PlastiKote paint?

I am getting ready to paint my block in Hemi Orange, and a friend of mine recommended PlastiKote 226. I use to see the stuff all over the place, but now no one in town carries it, and Amazon says 1 to 2 months to get it. I don't think they went out of business, since they say they can get it. Just seems strange to me, but thought that someone here might know what is happening with them.
 
OK, I had to go to the source on this one. I emailed PlastiKote, and received the following reply. So now we have an answer.

Thank you for contacting Valspar. We appreciate your inquiry.

Unfortunately this product has been discontinued. You may have luck finding any remaining stock on Amazon.com.

We suggest looking into Duplicolor or VHT for similar products.
 
I got a case of some of the last remaining Hemi orange from the dealership. **** is drying up fast. I was hoping to be able.to help out some members selling the stuff, but pretty hard to "quiet" a spray bomb lol.
I'll be keeping an eye out for Plastikote now too.
 
Bill Mitchell or Por15 make great shiny high solid content brush on paint that works great...
 
I bought brush on engine paint from eastwood company, sticks well and is easy to handle and you don't have to mask everything off you don't want painted. Looks the same on the block to me as spray did

I bought the spray on stuff from Eastwood and I like it. A lot. Much better than spray can anything.

As long as you have an air source and HVLP spray gun you can do it.

Never used the brush on stuff from Eastwood buy of its like the spray on stuff that would be good too.

I agree. Need to go with something else. Can't find 226 any where. Frustrating that such a good brand was discontinued and all the workers in Medina OH lost their jobs.
98 to lose jobs when Plasti-Kote in Medina closes in April
I suspect it has to do with Sherwin Williams buying Valspar in 2017 and discontinuing quality paint in favor of higher profit margins.
Duplicolor has been poor quality for me. How did it work for you?

I actually did not end up buy the Duplicolor, but went with Por 15. I have yet to put it on though since I have been working on other parts of the car.
 
I also purchased the POR15 hemi orange brushable for the 440 I'm doing.

Valspar have moved on paint companies across the globe, shut down and rationalized ranges: Some companies produced highly profitable, high quality, niche ranges, that simply didn't fit with the High Volume, High Turnover business model of Valspar: Those smaller companies, where great "Little" concerns selling valued and cherished products. The problem was they were small companies or "smaller" companies that were pains in the backside to Valspar in certain markets, so they bought them, upon reviewing inventories, they found products that were great money spinners for a smaller privately owned operator or long term family owned paint company, but problematic for the vast purchasing and turnover requirements of Valspar....That's business. Rustoleum a U.S. Brand produces the following automotive engine paints: Rustoleum are every bit as good as Plastikote were.

You'll find that The Plastikote Brand is manufactured in the UK now, (Duplicolor) but the range is dramatically curtailed in the products it offers compared to the heady U.S. days and is expanding well in the European market.

I worked in the Paint market in Australia for a paint company that imported Plastikote as an adjunct to their core range in the 80's and 90's: The company I worked for was one of those that was bought out by Valspar's international tentacles.

On another paint note......
Who has noticed the price of rattle can paint,??. I was looking for some Duplicolor, and am shocked at the price. Last year it was $8.99/can, NOW $13.99, WOW talk about inflation. I use to buy it from Jegs, or Summit. Not any more. Have to find another brand now.

Old thread I know, but to hell with duplicolor. They suck. I had three cans the same part number for Chrysler corporate blue and each can sprayed at least two different colors. Yup. Each ONE can sprayed more than one color. One sprayed THREE different shades. And yes, I know how to shake a spray can of paint up.

Yep.
All my Mopar engines from now on are going to be painted Chevy colors.
Most of the replacement parts are AC/Delco anyways.
Sox & Martin painted their engines Ford blue so Chevy engine paint colors works for Tom & Dartnut...

Wow, I can't believe this thread has been revived after all this time. Strangely I first went with the Por15 and it was a total mess. I ended up going with VHT with better results. Sadly the engine is still sitting out of the car just looking pretty.
